Job Description:

Schnabel Engineering is seeking an Entry-Level Geotechnical Engineer (0 to 5 years of professional experience) in our Blacksburg, Virginia office.  We are looking for a motivated candidate to join our collaborative team and work on projects across the country as well as close to home.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, and manage geotechnical field work
  • Communicate effectively with subcontractors, project managers, and clients
  • Log test borings and prepare boring logs
  • Review boring logs and material classifications
  • Assign, perform, and review laboratory tests
  • Interpret data and perform design calculations
  • Develop plans and figures using CAD and GIS programs
  • Assist in preparation of geotechnical proposals and reports
  • Observe geotechnical-related construction and prepare daily observation reports

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related major from an ABET-accredited program
  • 0-5 years of professional experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel, including assignments that may last several weeks away from the office.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and physically be able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders, and work outside

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • EIT certification
  • Completion of geotechnical-focused undergraduate and/or graduate level coursework
  • Prior internship or professional work in a related field
  • AutoCAD Civil3D, OpenGround, and/or GIS experience

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening
