About the role

Leidos currently has an opening for a Process Modeling Scientist to join our research support team supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), a U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) national laboratory (https://netl.doe.gov). This is an opportunity to conduct research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment, contributing to new areas of applied research to enhance the nation’s energy security and protect the environment for future generations.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary, scientific and technical-oriented national laboratory. NETL produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges to support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled professionals at three NETL research sites – Albany, OR, Morgantown, WV, and Pittsburgh, PA – conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE’s mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.

This position will support multiple research efforts requiring strong expertise in process design and modeling for carbon capture systems. The researcher will collaborate with a process design team and operators of the Direct Air Capture (DAC) Center in Pittsburgh to develop a cyber-physical system to evaluate the performance of carbon capture materials under a wide range of process conditions. The researcher will collaborate with National Energy Water Treatment and Speciation (NEWTS) Database team to develop a dashboard showing sites across the nation where energy-related waster stream samples and data have been collected.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform collaborative research to:
    • Develop representative process models to simulate conditions relevant for DAC systems.
    • Implement process models into a cyber-physical system, including hardware specification.
    • Be an expert resource in point source carbon capture technologies to support related projects.
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator (PI), other researchers, engineering and support staff to accomplish project-related tasks.
  • Disseminate research results through presentations in relevant scientific forums, and/or publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Required Education & Experience:

  • A PhD degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering or related fields of study.
  • Proficiency with process modeling tools such as AspenPlus and Matlab.
  • 5+ years experience in performing process modeling for solvent-based carbon capture systems.
  • Must be able to meet the requirement for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with DOE NETL researchers and program
  • Strong track record of previous research work in the form of conference presentations (oral or poster), and/or publications in relevant, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Prior experience working at a pilot plant as a process engineer and understands a wide variety of process instrumentation.
