Job Description

The Western Digital hardware engineering group is looking for a skilled and motivated electrical engineer to design and develop EMI/EMC solutions for client and datacenter SSD products. This role is responsible for start to finish ownership of EMI/EMC compliance - from specification to design, prototype, testing and manufacturing.  Will report to Director of SSD Hardware Validation.

 

  • Test, analyze, and validate SSD products for ESD, EMI, and RFI compliance.
  • Expand lab infrastructure and test coverage as needed to prepare for future product architectures and new customer requirements.
  • Responsible for test plans, lab setup, test execution, debug, root cause analysis, and report generation.
  • Technically lead global SSD EMC hardware group, 4-6 engineers ensuring consistent test coverage and capability at multiple sites. 
  • Work closely with ASIC, Hardware Design/Layout, FW, and Mechanical Design to develop product level EMI/EMC solutions.
  • Characterize EMC margin, evaluate competitive analysis, and analyze customer system applications for multiple SSD form factors, including M.2, U.2/U.3, E1.S, E1.L, E3.
  • Domestic and International travel as needed (~5%)

 

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or similar with at least 10 years of hands-on experience with EMI/EMC design and testing.
  • Strong fundamental magnetic, electromagnetic, and physics background. Strong understanding of conducted and radiated noise sources, coupling paths and their mitigation techniques. Strong understanding of board design, transmission line theory, insertion losses, crosstalk, and power supply noise effects.
  • Experience with test methods and the use of measurement equipment including spectrum analyzers, signal generators, amplifiers, antennas, and line filters. 
  • Experience modifying prototype hardware.
  • Highly experienced in global EMI/EMC codes, standards and regulations including IEC-61000-4-2, IEC-61000-4-3, CISPR32, and FCC Class-B. Ability to navigate and interpret ambiguity in test standards and customer requirements.
  • Preferred, skilled in the use of CAD simulation tools such as CST or HFSS.
  • Preferred, experience in coding (Python) to support test automation. 
  • Independent and can-do mindset.
  • Excellent communication, both written and oral.  Excellent collaboration skills.  Attention to detail.
  • Should be well organized and have the ability to be flexible in a changing work environment.  Strong ability to break complex problems into pieces and develop and deploy a comprehensive action plan.
