The Accounting Manager provides strategic leadership within the office and financial management for Mines. This position assists the Bursar with accurate financial reporting, collaboratively developing financial and accounting policies and procedures, and assists with documentation and reports for external audits as necessary. The Accounting Manager collaborates with various departments, supervises accounting staff, and represents the Bursar’s Office in a wide range of activities, committees, and meetings. This position will also provide regular support to other positions within the Controller’s staff team.

This is a hybrid work environment, with some work-from-home days weekly, depending on business need and in accordance with Mines Flexible Workplace Policy.

Financial Oversight and Reconciliation

  • Responsible for developing, proposing, and implementing financial policies, procedures, and strong internal controls that support University operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and update applicable training for various departments and works to ensure compliance.
  • Completes reconciliations and aging reports for student receivables, including materials used for reporting to the Board of Trustees.
  • Responsible for review of all reconciliations from direct reports.
  • Advises, reviews, and approves journal entries to correct any discrepancies identified by team performing reconciliations.

Student AR Analysis and Reporting

  • Completes a strategic analysis of student receivables and recommends strategies to the Bursar.
  • Responsible for creating reports in the University’s reporting tool and ERP system, to assist the department with reconciliations and informational management reporting. To be successful, the individual will need to understand the various system data elements, data tables and departmental needs.

Assisting with System Administration and Audits

  • Assists the Bursar with the A\R module in the Banner system, including running monthly jobs, some system upgrades, and system testing.
  • Assists the Bursar with upgrades and testing with external systems that integrate into the Banner A\R system. 
  • Assists the Bursar with documentation and reports for external audit as necessary.

Supervision

  • Supervises three team members providing supervision, training, and support.  This management includes overseeing day-to-day operations, assigning job duties, providing job training, scheduling work, and monitoring and evaluating performance.
  • Creates and maintains various training programs, policies and procedures, various manuals, outbound correspondence, forms, etc. for the department. At times, position will re-evaluate these materials and recommend improvements/changes to existing procedures in the department and ways to increase efficiency.
  • Trains the University’s  staff in the detailed operations of the Bursar Office and collection processes by using University fiscal rules and regulations, University’s policies, established accounting principles and other authoritative guidance that affects operations and promotes efficiencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field with progressive professional-level experience in financial accounting or budgeting. 
  • A minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible accounting and financial management experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in financial software and accounting systems.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and data integrity.
  • Experience in an A\R module within Banner or a similar system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a higher education institution.
  • Aptitude for understanding and applying complex State and Federal Regulations.
  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines and deliver a quality, error free product.
  • Analyzation and problem solving skills including the ability to use independent judgment.
  • Supervision experience.

Salary and Benefits 

$76,500 - $80,000
