Job Description

The Respiratory Education Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

  • The Respiratory Education Coordinator demonstrates exemplary direct patient care and maintains standards of practice relevant to specific clinical settings. Under the direction of the respiratory manager, the Respiratory Education Coordinator is accountable for formal and informal staff education and orientation of respiratory therapists and students, physicians, patients, and other clinicians, and integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence based practice principles, and clinical expertise in respiratory practice into educational experiences.
  • The Respiratory Education Coordinator demonstrates effective leadership and problem solving skills, supports collaborative education and team building, and participates in multidisciplinary quality initiatives to enhance clinical care and patient outcomes.
  • The Respiratory Education Coordinator works collaboratively with the Academy, peers, the Department of Professional Development and the Shared Leadership Committees to identify learning needs, develop and implement educational strategies and participate in learning effectiveness evaluation.
  • The Education Coordinator adheres to the AARC Statement of Ethics and Professional Conduct and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities:

  • The Respiratory Education Coordinator provides oversight and quality management of the Respiratory Eval and Treat program.
  • Reviews and provides input on all departmental and respiratory related policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Assists the managers with new employee orientations.
  • Coordinates the Respiratory Care clinical proficiency and competency program, clinical orientations for new staff, evaluation of new equipment/products and identification of educational programs that will support the advancement of respiratory care practice.
  • Coordinates the clinical education of respiratory care students from Midwest regional colleges and universities, and is actively involved with Respiratory Care educational programs.
  • Participates in unit specific orientation processes in conjunction with the NMH Academy, peers, and managers. Collaborates with Clinical Practice Managers to continue and reinforce orientation activities. 
  • Coordinates mandatory education activities including off shifts and weekends.
  • Collaborates on developmental plans for individual staff.
  • Integrates research and evidence based practice into formal and informal education programs.
  • Collaborates with the NMH Academy to identify educational needs and to develop and implement appropriate strategies. Supports ongoing development of critical thinking skills of direct care staff.

Additional Functions

  • Participates in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as assigned.
  • Remains clinically proficient within area of expertise. 
  • Member of select committees representing Respiratory Care.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed and through the role as clinical instructor during orientation of new hires. 

Qualifications

Required

  • Illinois License as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
  • National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentials as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
  • NBRC specialty credentials of Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) and Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS) within one year of hire
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Respiratory Care or Science
  • Minimum of five years of experience in the respiratory department of a major academic medical center

Preferred

  • Master’s Degree in Respiratory Care
