Position Overview

The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire an energetic and versatile instructor to perform highly specialized teaching duties at the Early Childhood/pre-school level at the Illinois School for Visually Impaired (ISVI).  This position coordinates and participates in student evaluations of children who attend the Early Childhood Program and plans curriculum and prepares lesson plans and other materials. The incumbent will provide Braille instruction and/or produce Braille materials to blind and visually impaired students and support efforts to instruct Early Intervention providers on visual impairments.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs highly specialized teaching duties at the Early Childhood/pre-school level.

  2. Plans curriculum and prepares lesson plans and other materials.

  3. Coordinates and participates in student evaluations of children who attend the Early Childhood Program and/or are served through Early Intervention.

  4. Provides support for efforts to instruct Early Intervention providers on visual impairments.

  5. Attends training sessions/meetings.

  6. Recommends and/or requisitions supplies and equipment for the low vision programs throughout campus.

  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) issued Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed in Special Education.

  2. Requires possession of a current and valid ISBE-issued Professional Educator License with endorsement appropriate for Teacher of Students who are blind or visually impaired prekindergarten through age 22.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. One (1) year of professional experience working with media used with students who are blind/visually impaired such as Braille and or other technologies.

  2. One (1) year of professional experience utilizing current educational trends, techniques, and best practices.

  3. One (1) year of professional experience preparing written documentation related to student performance and education.

  4. One (1) year of professional experience using the tools, materials and equipment associated with required coursework.

  5. One (1) year of professional experience maintaining patience and tolerance while working with students with a wide range of behaviors.

  6. One (1) year of professional experience maintaining effective working relationships with staff, assigned students and parents.
