Position Overview

JOB SUMMARYThe Collection Development Librarian is responsible for collection development, maintenance, and evaluation and exercises professional judgement to identify, select and purchase all adult and youth materials for Vail Public Library. In addition, the Librarian administers the budget for overall development and maintenance of the Library’s Collection. As a member of the administrative team, the Librarian is responsible for decision-making with regards to new databases & technologies, strategic planning, and periodic review of programs, services & policies being considered for evaluation & improvement.

 

THE DETAILS OF THE JOB

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES• Analyzes community and library data to build a solid collection of current adult, young adult, and children’s materials using a variety of sources including journals, media, publishers, and distributors.• Supervises two staff members including a part-time library tech - cataloging and full-time library tech processing and circulation.• Exercises professional judgement to anticipate demand, address customer and staff requests, and actively assesses the collection for effectiveness and diversity. Tracks outcomes of collection-based strategic initiatives.• Promotes collection internally and externally in collaboration with library staff using social media, readers advisory, book lists, displays, and other resources as available.• Participates in the development of the annual budget for the library collection and manages annual spending on materials.• Stays current with library trends and utilizes collection development tools including weeding, statistical reports, WorldCat, and other internal and external resources available.• Participates on the library’s Administrative Team which provides strategic direction for the library.• Coordinates the replacement of lost/damaged print materials for all library collections. • Supports staff that provide collection management and circulation service, including but not limited to items that are Missing, Claims Returned, Lost & Paid, On Hold shelf, and In Transit. • Undertake collection development projects including shifting, weeding, shelf reading, and organizing to ensure the library’s collection is easily accessible and tidy.

 

PUBLIC SERVICE • Works some designated hours on the Service Desk and fills in for other staff members. Handles a variety of tasks at the Service Desk including, but not limited to, reader’s advisory, reference assistance, providing Vail visitors with local tourist information, processing library card applications, check-ins, check-outs, renewals, processing incoming courier items, processing incoming mail and magazines/newspapers, pulling hold requests and preparing them for transit to other libraries, and processing overdue notices.• May participate in weekly rotation of picking up items from the Safeway book drop• Assists the public with online databases, internet searching, and digital collections, including eBooks• Attends and participates in staff meeting discussions• Participates in collection maintenance tasks, including shelving, shelf reading, and weeding• Completes special projects and tasks when requested• Provides exceptional customer service to all library patrons and visitors and abides by all Town of Vail core values• Performs the job in accordance with all Town of Vail safety practices• Other duties as assigned

 

Skills / Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:    

  • Knowledge of Reference & Circulation-related functions.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications for library services.
  • Ability to work effectively & communicate with library staff as well as patrons in a pleasant, courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of current trends and emerging technologies in Public Service in a library setting.
  • Ability to work well with patrons of all ages, both individually and in groups.
  • Knowledge of standard library procedures, current info technology, database search capabilities, library procedures, and policies.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

A Masters Degree in Library and Information Science preferred  from an ALA accredited school, and 3-5 years of increasingly responsible library work, preferably in adult programming and reference services.
