Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.
Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a mental health treatment facility owned and operated by the State of Florida and is part of the Department of Children and Families. The department’s mission is to “work in partnership with local communities to protect the vulnerable, promote strong and economically self-sufficient families, and advance personal and family recovery and resiliency.”

This is a highly responsible and professional position that will serve as a Senior Dentist. This position will collaborate with each section within the state facilities and be required to use independent judgement, take initiative in carrying out duties and responsibilities and should be extraordinarily detail oriented.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities include:
- This position is located at Florida State Hospital and is responsible for dental care of patients at the main dental clinic. The duties and responsibilities are as follows:
- X-rays teeth and gums for infections and diseases. (x-rays).
- Presents a dental health program and conducts dental examination and evaluation. (Diagnosis and Examination).
- Treats infections, diseases, injuries, and malformations of the mouth and teeth (Emergencies, Periodontics, and Endodontics).
- Fill Cavities. (Operative Dentistry).
- Performs dental restorative work (Prosthetics).
- Renders consultative dental services and serves in on-call duty status for nights, weekends and holidays to provide 24/7 coverge of resident emergencies.
- Supervises dental personnel.
- Extracts teeth. (Oral Surgery).
- Perform other related duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position:
- Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques of dentistry.
- Knowledge of dental treatment techniques.
- Skill in using dental instruments and equipment.
- Skill in filling cavities, extracting teeth, performing dental restorative work and treating dental diseases, infections, injuries and malformations of the mouth and teeth.
- Ability to design and/or present dental health programs.
- Ability to supervise people.
- Ability to perform dental examinations and diagnose dental problems.
- Ability to monitor the quantity and quality of dental care.
- Ability to provide consultation to others regarding dental services.
- Ability to train others.
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work activities.
