About the Lab of Atomic and Solid State Physics

The Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics (LASSP) is under the umbrella of the Research Division and is one of two research arms of the Physics Department. LASSP has 30+ faculty, 18 administrative & technical staff, 50-60 graduate students, and 50+ other academic professionals (research associates, postdocs, visitors). LASSP is also the administrative home of the Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science (KIC) and the Cornell NEXT Nano Initiative, which are both interdisciplinary, cross-university, and outward-facing programs.

The Opportunity

We are looking for an Event and Office Coordinator to join our vibrant team at the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics (LASSP). What You Will Do:

  • Organize and Coordinate Special Events:  You will take the lead in planning and managing seminars, VIP visits, and various special events, ensuring all logistical details are perfectly aligned.
  • Administrative Expertise: From coordinating travel arrangements to managing space and resources, your role will be central to the smooth operation of our community's administrative needs.
  • Support and Guide our Community: As a primary contact point, you will welcome and assist LASSP members and guests, providing guidance and support to foster a friendly and efficient environment.
  • Supervise and Train: You will manage and mentor our undergraduate student workers, playing a key role in their development and daily activities.

What We Need

All applicants must include a resume and cover letter for full consideration. 

  • Experience making travel arrangements.
  • Experience managing small projects through completion.
  • Expertise with typical business software, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel especially) and the ability to help others troubleshoot.
  • Ability to learn new programs/tools quickly and to adapt to changing policies and procedures.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color. 
  • Experience working with diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellbeing programs. 
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it’s ok if you don’t.

  • Experience working with Software, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Publisher, and/or Photoshop) or other similar design software suites; website maintenance, and/or media management skills.
