Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider.   It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

The Electron Ion Collider is seeking a specialized electrical engineer to work with the Instrumentation Group Leader, as well as with Accelerator Design and the RF Teams, to work on several uniquely challenging subsystem projects spanning these disciplines.  These include transverse and longitudinal dampers and feedback systems required to stabilize and control emittance growth of the intense beams in the EIC electron and proton accelerators and storage rings.  The role also involves broadly participating in related aspects of the evolving EIC accelerator physics and engineering design, collaborating with, and mentoring other engineers, physicists, and technicians from experienced to early career.  The role requires creative approaches to solving complex accelerator problems, combining the previous experience of the worldwide accelerator and instrumentation community and a desire to push subsystem performance beyond current state of the art.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop conceptual, preliminary and final designs supported by calculations, simulations and subsystem component evaluations for accelerator beam instrumentation and feedback systems.

  • Lead electro-mechanical detector designs.

  • Provide engineering support and subject matter expertise in all areas inter-related to accelerator beam instrumentation and feedback systems.

  • Interact with technical experts, engineers, and scientists to achieve goals

  • Participate in and contribute to related meetings and reviews.

  • Provide informal and formal documentation (technical notes, publications, etc..) showing progress, updates, challenges, and future directions.

  • Collaborate with colleagues on accelerator physics and engineering topics.

  • Mentor other engineers, physicists, and technicians, from early career to experienced.

  • Provide creative approaches to solving complex accelerator problems.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Physics, or related discipline

  • At least ten (10) years of experience in advanced beam instrumentation systems for particle accelerators and colliders, with significant direct involvement in or responsibility for operational systems, including commissioning of new systems

  • Extensive experience with management and collaborative development of complex accelerator engineering systems, projects and diverse teams of engineers, physicists, and technicians

  • Extensive experience with RF beam position monitor pick-up design and related analog front-end electronics, digital signal processing techniques, signal filtering, beam line device impedance and wakefield analysis, RF/Electro-magnetic design and simulation, RF/Microwave bench instruments, etc.

  • Demonstrated record of publication in journals, conferences, workshops, schools, etc.

  • A record of teaching, mentoring or similar activities that demonstrates an appreciation and interest in knowledge sharing and workforce development

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering, Physics or related discipline

  • 3D Electro-magnetic analysis and simulation tools

  • Experience in both electromagnetic design of, and signal processing for high frequency (GHz range) pickups. Hands on experience commissioning such systems

  • Experience with designing, coordinating fabrication, testing and commissioning wide band kickers.<
