About the role

The Role:

In this leadership role, you will provide strategic technology and software engineering leadership to support and enhance Moderna's Clinical Development Operations. You will be instrumental in defining and executing the digital enablement strategy for a large group working on multiple clinical studies and programs. Reporting to Moderna’s CIO and CDO, you will drive cross-functional decisions related to digital and systems enablement, leveraging quantitative, data-driven operational planning, collaboration, and execution. You will lead a team of ~80 direct and indirect reports, fostering a culture of innovation and digital transformation.

Here’s What You Will do:

  • Define long-term IT and software engineering strategy within Clinical Development Operations, aligning with business strategy and objectives.

  • Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to define technology operational priorities, ensuring effective resource allocation and execution of strategic initiatives.

  • Oversee the implementation and management of both commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and custom-developed applications within Clinical Development, Regulatory, and Pharmacovigilance functions.

  • Integrate digital tools, big and small data platforms, and partnerships to create a transformational clinical experience for patients and physicians in collaboration with the Chief Information Officer and the broader Digital organization.

  • Direct the product management, software engineering, data science, and support teams to meet strategic digital objectives.

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision for leveraging digital technology to streamline and enhance development functions.

  • Foster a culture of innovation within the software engineering team, challenging the status quo with new technologies and creative solutions within existing systems.

  • Conduct structured evaluations and selections of new software solutions, ensuring they meet the technical and business requirements.

  • Oversee the execution of complex, integrated software engineering projects, proactively identifying risks, devising mitigation strategies, and driving timelines.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to develop a multi-year roadmap of key capabilities aligned with business strategy.

  • Participate in functional leadership teams to align digital efforts and projects with evolving business needs.

  • Manage the budget for IT and software engineering projects within Clinical Development Operations, ensuring cost-effective use of resources and delivering projects within financial constraints.

Here is What You Will Bring to the Table:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Business, or related field; advanced degree preferred.

  • 15+ years' experience in product development, software engineering or solution design IT leadership roles, preferably within the pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare industry, with at least 10 years in a leadership role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to set strategic direction and drive organizational performance in a complex, matrixed, global organization.

  • Deep understanding of the clinical development process and the role of IT and software engineering within Clinical Development Operations.

  • Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with a proven ability to inspire and motivate a high-performing software engineering team.

  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand complex business challenges and deliver effective IT and software solutions.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Experience collaborating with a broader IT organization, demonstrating the ability to integrate and align strategies and initiatives.

  • Experience leading digital transformation initiatives and implementing innovative technology solutions in a complex R&D environment.

  • Strong financial acumen and working knowledge of sophisticated modeling tools.

  • Proficiency in analytics and hypothesis generation to drive performance-oriented decision-making.
