Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratories; receiving, typing, testing, and recording blood bank inventories; maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Organize work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly.
Maintain quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols.
Serve as technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Participate with Laboratory Quality Improvement Program, Antibiotic Stewardship Program and with point of care testing.    
Identify and communicate abnormal patient conditions by alerting supervisory personnel, the pathologist, the patient physician, or nurse, reporting mandated information to the public health department or other designated officials.
(Toxicology) identify the presence or quantity of drugs of abuse, therapeutic drugs, and toxic substances by operating toxicology instrumentation and performing manual methods for the performance of drug screens, blood alcohol levels, and carbon monoxide levels.
(Chemistry) provide test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating chemistry equipment, performing hand chemistries.
(Hematology) provide test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation equipment, performing manual methods of differentials.
(Immunology) provide test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating equipment such as the molecular technology, radioimmunoassay, enzyme immunoassay, and serological testing, and waived testing kits.
(Microbiology) provide physician with information for treatment of patient infection by performing technical procedures for the identification or susceptibility of bacteria, parasites, fungi, and mycobacteria.
(Blood Bank) ensure the patient of receiving compatible blood/blood components/issuing units as emergency blood release technology; assure future retrieval of patient transfusion information by preparing patient packets and maintaining blood bank database.
Contribute to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers by following established standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations.
Maintain patient confidentiality by keeping laboratory information confidential.
Serve and protect the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and The Joint Commission.
Enhance laboratory services and hospital reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
Maintain annual training and competencies by a set due date.
Must be able to operate, maintain, and quality control for all automatic testing equipment.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
MLT degree from an accredited college or university.
Education and training equivalent to an associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology to include:

Education: 60 semester hours, including either 24 semester hours of Medical Laboratory Technology courses (6 hours of Chemistry; 6 hours of Biology, and 12 hours in Chemistry, Biology, or Medical Laboratory Technology, or any combination).


Current certification as an MLT with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT).
Must possess a valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health Program requirements and background investigation.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:

Knowledge of applicable tribal, federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, including The Joint Commission Accreditation.
