Overview:

We’re hiring a Linux Systems Engineer who will play a crucial role in managing and supporting Linux servers and large storage systems! Areas of focus include performing Linux Server, storage, and application support. You will also work with users as well as other Linux System Engineers to support ORNL research projects. This position resides in the Research IT Infrastructure group in the Research Computing division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Our goal, in Research IT Infrastructure, is to enable research while protecting ORNL assets, especially from cyber incidents. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot various Linux server-related issues.
  • Install, configure, and maintain various Linux server distros, including Red Hat.
  • Install, configure, and maintain system software, both commercial packages and various freely available software (including Apache, MYSQL, PHP, etc.).
  • Install, configure, and maintain storage systems, including NAS (Network Attached Storage) and SAN (Storage Area Network).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to storage systems and file systems.
  • Monitor and optimize storage performance and capacity.
  • Ensure data integrity and security for storage systems.
  • Patch both system and 3rd party vendor software to ensure security and stability. Monitor for patch releases and work with the customers and other admins to ensure the patches are applied in a timely manner.
  • Provide consulting in both the selection and purchase of hardware and software.
  • Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.
  • Work with other system engineers and vendors to resolve both hardware and software issues.
  • Work with local bargaining unit personnel on hardware installation and hardware repairs where it is outside the scope of a vendor.
  • Utilize Internet resources (mailing lists, blogs, etc.) to resolve problems with open source software.
  • Develop and document procedures for startup, execution, shutdown, backup, and recovery.
  • Help maintain and manage cloud data and resources.
  • Monitor systems performance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in information technology, information systems, computer science, computer engineering, business, science, or a related field of study and a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of Linux server administration experience, or a MS degree with a minimum of four (4) to six (6) years of relevant and aligned experience, or a PhD degree with up to three (3) years of relevant and aligned experience. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience supporting Linux servers.
  • Common scripting abilities BASH, YAML.
  • Basic knowledge supporting clustered system.
  • Experience supporting common storage systems (SAN, NAS, LOCAL, NFS SMB).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and the ability to work well with peer system administrators.
  • Demonstrated capabilities to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of multiple Linux distributions is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of open-source web application services (Apache, Tomcat, JBoss, etc.) is desired.
  • Experience supporting large network attached storage systems.
  • Previous experience working in a government, scientific or other highly technical
  • environment strongly desired.
  • Experience installing, supporting, and maintaining VMWare clusters.
  • Automation with Ansible, Puppet or other tools
  • Experience supporting automation and configuration management tools.
