Position Summary
This position reports to the Transmission Relay Construction & Maintenance (C&M) Manager for each regional jurisdiction (Ex. Carolinas East, Carolinas West, Florida, Midwest). The position is responsible for providing day to day leadership to a workgroup of college degreed performers (Relay/SCADA Technicians) focused on providing field services for Protective Relaying and Control Systems (Relay), Battery Systems, supervisory control and data acquisition systems. Supervisor provides onsite technical support for maintenance, construction, operations, and generation, and other departments.
This position is accountable for all construction and maintenance aspects of the Protection and Control systems within T&D substations and switching stations, Generator switchyards, within generating facilities, and some industrial customer facilities. In addition, supervisor will serve as first line technical support for his/her team. Accountability includes; effective cost management, error-free execution of relay/SCADA activities, and relay/SCADA equipment performance. This position is responsible for reinforcing the expected results of their Relay C&M workgroup such that it is focused on: Compliance with applicable corporate programs; NERC requirements; Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S); Sarbanes-Oxley; Project Management key performance indicators; etc. Individual will foster a culture that values self-reporting of compliance violations/errors/Human Performance events, continuous improvement, and consistency between each area of responsibility.
Key aspects of the workgroup/position:
Makes decisions in high stress situations and ensures error free work activities. The Relaying/SCADA equipment installed and maintained by this group is complex in nature, and of critical importance to grid reliability. There are high consequences to not installing or maintaining this equipment with a high degree of quality. Two highly publicized large-scale outage events have been linked to activities performed by relay personnel in other regions of the country. The safety of our employees and members of the public may also be jeopardized by Relay/SCADA systems that are not installed or maintained properly. This position supports the overall success Transmission, Distribution, and Generation C&M activities by ensuring that protective Relaying/SCADA activities are performed in the safest, most reliable, and cost-effective manner while meeting the customer’s requested in-service schedules.
Similarly, this position supports the overall success of the annual maintenance including significant qualities of NERC mandated maintenance activities, by ensuring that protective relaying activities are completed safely, reliably, cost-effectively, according to technical bases and within prescribed schedules. Due to the increasing regulatory requirements in this area, this position will ensure that documentation of work completed meets the expectations of the Relay C&M organization (accurate, retrievable, and compliant). This supervisor is responsible for overseeing and managing external relay resources assigned to their area with the same set of expectations, which can add significantly to the size of the workgroup. As NERC PRC005 standards continue to mature, supervisors will provide input to the new work methods required to become complaint with new developing standards.
Responsibilities
Manages the Relay C&M Team to ensure the provision of reliable and quality service for distribution served customers and achieve process results.
Ensures assigned work is completed according to schedule and in compliance with design and construction standards.
Ensures standard work processes are followed by team.
Complete field reviews to observe progress, performance, quality and results.
Monitors team results to identify opportunities for improvement.
Initiates actions to ensure objectives are achieved and improvement opportunities are addressed.
Ensures geographic area is appropriately staffed and supported for 24/7 response for relay/SCADA resources. This includes both individual availability and setting employee expectations.
