JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State IT is seeking a Software Engineer interested in server-side development. This position will establish and maintain best practices in software development and design, design and develop software for multiple systems based on identified business needs and requirements, as well as integrate more complex elements and technological advances into work assignments.

The location of this position is flexible and can operate fully remote within the United States, fully in-person at our University Park Campus, or in a hybrid model of both in-person and remote. Standard working hours are in the eastern time zone. Candidates must be able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Qualifications

Education

The successful candidate will be skilled in modern principles of software engineering and have a strong interest in server-side development. Desired programming skills include Go, Java, REST API Design, and SQL. Additional knowledge of continuous integration, Kubernetes, Helm, Docker and other programming languages is a plus.

Skills and Experience

This position will be filled at an Intermediate or Advanced Professional depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. The intermediate professional level requires a minimum of an associate's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional education and/or experience are required for higher-level positions.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with end users and service managers to identify and analyze requirements
  • Design, develop, test, debug, install, implement, modify and support new or existing applications software
  • Develop product specifications and development plan; participate in all aspects of the development process 
  • Design and create prototypes and estimate resource requirements 
  • Develop the framework and design integrations for multiples systems
  • Develop testing strategies and automated testing within an established architecture framework 
  • Contribute to software development efforts as a subject matter expert, reviewing applications for compliance, accessibility, and security standards 
  • Implement, review progress, and evaluate results on complex work assignments 
  • Investigate data and/or program problems; determine source of problem; take corrective action 
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts by adopting processes that improve overall efficiency
