About the role

What's the role?

Team:

Join us in tackling one of the most fascinating challenges in logistics: the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP).

HERE Tour planning is the engine behind multi-vehicle route optimization, empowering businesses to design smarter, faster, and more driver-friendly tours.

We harness the world’s most precise and up-to-date map data, real-time traffic insights, road restrictions, and driver preferences to craft tours that are both efficient and practical. Our mission? To transform complexity into clarity—delivering solutions that reduce travel time, cut costs, and keep logistics running like clockwork.

But we don’t stop at optimization. Our algorithms factor in every critical detail—driver preferences, delivery time windows, vehicle capacities, and compliance requirements—to ensure that every plan isn’t just efficient and adhering to required constraints. This holistic approach drives cost savings, delivery accuracy, and driver satisfaction while ensuring operations remain sustainable and compliant.

We are a diverse, passionate team of experts dedicated to solving complex logistics challenges and delivering impactful solutions. Committed to quality and innovation, we collaborate to shape the future of logistics while continuously growing our skills.

Our tech stack includes Rust, Kotlin, Python, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform—empowering us to build scalable, high-performance systems.

As a key team member, you’ll advocate for our customers, define quality standards, and help deliver solutions that truly make a difference.

Are you passionate about building systems that enable groundbreaking solutions? Do you have the technical expertise and leadership skills to spearhead a team focused on innovation? We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to lead the development of extended services that empower our VRP solver (Tour Planning) to deliver best-in-class tour optimization.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of developing cutting-edge capabilities that enhance our VRP solver by leveraging the world’s most accurate map data, live traffic information, and other contextual services. Your work will provide the essential inputs that make our solutions smarter, faster, and more driver-friendly.

In this role, you’ll lead a team of engineers and researchers to design and implement scalable systems, ensuring high-quality and innovative delivery. This position combines technical depth, research-oriented thinking, and strong leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Development: Architect and oversee the creation of extended services that provide optimized inputs to our VRP solver, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems.

  • Innovate with Map Data: Design algorithms and services that leverage map data, live traffic, and road restrictions to generate actionable insights.

  • Tech lead: Mentor and guide a talented team of developers and researchers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the VRP solver team to align extended services with solver needs and customer requirements.
  • Performance Optimization: Ensure all services are scalable, high-performing, and reliable in production environments.

NOTE: its an individual contributor role

Who are you?

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related fields (PhD is a strong plus).

  • 8+ years of work experience in a similar role.
