Compensation includes a base salary of $189,100.00 - $315,100.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.

Job Description

Cox Business, the commercial sales division of Cox Communications, has an opening for a strategic lawyer to fill the role of Assistant General Counsel

This individual will serve as a trusted advisor, complex deal negotiator, and strategic partner to a fast-paced and sophisticated sales team.

This individual will partner with a team of transactional lawyers to provide legal support to Cox Business, and its portfolio of affiliates, including, RapidScale, Hospitality Network, BluePrint RF and others, with total annual revenues of approximately $3.5+ Billion.

Experience is preferred in the following areas:

  • Fiber transport, telecommunications, dark fiber leases, IRUs, fiber operations and maintenance agreements, wireless technologies, small cell, smart city, Internet, Wi-Fi, cloud services and similar technologies, 

  • Telecommunications sales to commercial customers, including sales to wireless customers, wireline customers, aggregators, value added resellers, hyperscalers, government customers, and large industries such as technology, wireless communications, education, hospitality, healthcare, and banking,

  • Experience with legal support and integration of newly acquired companies a plus,

  • Familiarity with legal support of RFP responses and similar experience a plus,

  • Familiarity with government funding (e.g. E-rate or other) a plus, and

  • Experience with sales agent agreements a plus.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience as a deal negotiator for large/complex contractual transactions and excellent drafting and negotiation skills,

  • Familiarity with the operational transactional needs of a high-volume sales organization, 

  • A vision of how to make a sales organization more efficient through use of innovative technology, training, playbooks, guides for sales, management of sales contract templates, etc.,

  • Excellent communications skills and the ability to update leadership on deal negotiations by summarizing and communicating key issues,

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to act independently with little supervision,

  • Experience engaging and managing outside counsel in an effective and efficient manner,

  • A team-player with the ability to work collaboratively with teams throughout various parts of the US where Cox Business operates, and

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships with the sales organization and their boundary partners, understand their strategic direction, and support them accordingly. 

Cox Business, is a division of Cox Communications and is the provider of fiber transport, telecommunications, technology, and cloud services to over 400,000 small, medium and large commercial retail and wholesale customers.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Key strategic member of the legal team supporting Cox Business and its portfolio of services, providing trusted legal advice and counsel to a fast-paced and sophisticated sales team. 

  • Lead negotiator for complex deals.

  • Inform senior leadership of complex deals and areas of legal risk. 

  • Identify and lead solutions to improve efficiency of legal support, leveraging new technologies, playbooks, training, etc.

  • Strategically oversee effective and cost-efficient use of outside counsel.

  • Has a growth mindset and "can-do" attitude.

Qualifications 

  • J.D. degree, a member in good standing of at least one state bar.

  • 10+ years of legal experience as a practicing attorney, including several years as a transactional lawyer. In-house experience preferred.

  • Must live in a location where Cox Business, RapidScale, BluePrint RF, Hospitality Network or Segra operate.

  • Proven experience working with a legal team for an established corporate sales department
