The Opportunity

Black & Veatch is seeking a Staff Instrumentation & Controls Engineering Specialist to function as a technical specialist or in a lead role for Nuclear / Power Generation projects. With minimal supervision, this professional will apply advanced engineering techniques and analyses, develop approaches to more complex engineering problems, and provide technical guidance to project teams and lower-level staff. 

Black & Veatch (B&V) is engaged in a variety of engineering and design activities in support of the addition of power plants in North America and around the world including Small Modular Reactors (SMR).  This work entails studies, procurement, design for power plants including the Balance of Plant systems required for support.   Instrumentation and controls professionals are needed to work as part of our team.  Professionals will be integrated into our existing teams based on their expertise and experience.   

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review complex I&C engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects, including control logic diagrams, network architecture diagrams, instrument lists, I/O lists, installation details, schematics, wiring drawings, calculations, studies, technical specifications, and procurement documents. 
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques and analyses to recognize, define, and resolve complex problems within assigned areas of responsibility. 
  • Provide technical guidance to others regarding I&C projects, discipline standards, design guides, applicable engineering codes, and Black & Veatch policies and procedures. 
  • Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements for engineering work and ensure compliance with the Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks. 
  • Review lower-level engineering work or assignments and actively delegate appropriate tasks to develop depth of project execution staff. 
  • Coordinate with project leadership and internal/external team members on moderately complex projects, including coordination with other disciplines on design details and project execution needs. 
  • Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers on low to moderately complex projects and communicate those interests to project team members to support effective execution. 
  • Serve as a technical specialist for I&C systems and contribute to knowledge management, mentoring, continuous improvement, and pursuit or business development activities as needed. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineering (PE/P.Eng.) license preferred, or ability to acquire PE/P.Eng. license within
