About the role

The Team:

The Hospital Support Services (HSS) team forms an integral part of the Royal Hobart Hospital and the broader Hospitals South network, delivering essential non-clinical services that enable safe, effective, and high-quality healthcare. HSS encompasses a diverse portfolio including Communications, Environmental Services, Food Services, and Medical Orderly and Security Services. Working under the leadership of the Director of Hospital Support Services, the team plays a vital role in supporting frontline healthcare delivery through operational excellence, strategic planning, and continuous improvement. The team fosters a collaborative and values-driven culture that is focused on service quality, safety, innovation, and community outcomes.

Reporting to the Director of Hospital Support Services, the Assistant Director provides high-level operational leadership across a broad range of service portfolios including Communications, Environmental Services, Food Services, and Medical Orderly and Security Services. The role is responsible for driving performance, ensuring service quality, and supporting strategic and operational initiatives that enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of hospital support functions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, managing and supporting the operational delivery of key support services across Hospitals South.

  • Providing strategic advice and authoritative support to the Director, including on policy, resource optimisation, service redesign, and risk management.

  • Building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure coordinated and responsive service delivery.

  • Supporting change management initiatives that improve current service models and prepare the organisation for future needs.

This is a leadership role that requires strong operational management capability, strategic thinking, and a commitment to high-quality healthcare support.

You will need:

  • High level experience in the management of a range of support services in a highly complex organisation.
  • High level ability to manage human, physical and financial resources with the ability to apply contemporary management practices in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the current issues impacting on the health sector at industry and State level, with an understanding as it relates to support services within the broader health context.

Details of appointment:

Permanent full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible.

Salary: $128,102 to $134,832 per annum. Our Employer 11.5% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

  • Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022
