Economist/Senior Economist (Egypt) - MCDDC

International Monetary Fund
Washington, United Statesfull_timeVerifiedPosted 19 Aug 2025

About the role

Work for the IMF. Work for the World.

The Middle East and Central Asia Department (MCD) has an opening for an Economist/Senior Economist in Division C to work on Egypt.

Egypt is a high-profile case. The assignment provides the selected candidate with an opportunity to make a difference in a country that faces many complex economic challenges. Egypt is a top 3 borrower from the Fund, with a four-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) underway and a recently approved arrangement under the RSF.  Reviews are semiannual.  Under the program, Egypt has undertaken important reforms to stabilize the economy despite facing large exogenous shocks, including from neighboring conflicts and trade disruptions in the Red Sea.  However, looking forward, much greater efforts are needed to reduce the state footprint and support private sector growth to achieve program objectives. Boosting tax revenues, further reducing debt vulnerabilities, addressing fiscal risks from off-budget operations, and improving governance in the financial sector are additional near-term challenges.

The selected candidate will be part of a large team that includes two other desks, functional department economists, and a resident representative office. The selected candidate will be expected to contribute to informing and developing the team’s views on economic developments, policies, and conditionality under the program, as well as monitoring of program performance. He/she will be expected to interact closely with official counterparts and other external and internal stakeholders. There will be significant opportunities for drafting, including program and surveillance related documents. Time permitting, the candidate could also participate in MCD policy groups or one-off opportunities supporting MCD’s internal or external engagement strategy.

Division C covers the following countries: Djibouti, Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. The Mission Chief for Egypt is Ivanna Vladkova Hollar.

Qualifications

In addition to the qualifications set forth in the job standards below, the successful candidate must have a very strong background in macroeconomics, sound judgement, and excellent organizational skills. Strong written and oral communication skills are required, as is the ability to work independently and deliver high quality outputs under tight deadlines. Successful candidates should be recognized team players with excellent interpersonal and diplomatic skills, able to foster strong working relationships with colleagues and counterparts, and resilient in the face of change and ambiguity. Experience with Fund program work is highly desirable.
