Senior Gas Pipeline Construction Inspector
Our Gas Construction Quality Control team at Colorado Springs Utilities is hiring a Senior Gas Pipeline Construction Inspector to help ensure the safety, reliability, and performance of our gas distribution infrastructure. In this job, you will utilize your inspection experience by providing the oversight of construction and installation of all gas infrastructure in new subdivisions for all assigned gas contractor construction crews, sites, and projects.
This position is designated as an SPR role (Single Pay Rate); starting pay is set at $51.05/hr; with an increase to $53.60/hr after successfully completing the 6-month probationary period.
Key Areas of Focus:
- Pre-inspecting project sites for readiness, arranging, and scheduling pre-construction meetings for new gas mainline extension and new subdivision projects, gas main and service renewal projects, and 150# high-pressure steel projects
- Performing thorough inspections and providing oversight of construction and installation of all gas infrastructure in new subdivisions for all assigned gas contractor construction crews, sites, and projects where gas-only or joint trench utilities (electric/gas/telecom) are being installed
- Performing gas service line tie-ins and inspections, gas service line relocations, and meter moves
- Arranging and coordinating meetings with contractors for construction conflicts and utility crossings that are occurring near gas pipelines
- Instructing classes and narrating and performing safety presentations as required
- Ensuring all Department of Transportation clearance regulations are adhered to by all contractors when crossing any Colorado Springs Utilities' gas facilities
- Performing regulatory bridge and creek crossing inspections required by the Department of Transportation and is responsible for detecting, documenting, and reporting any and all damage that has occurred to gas pipelines that are installed through or that are attached directly to a bridge structure or crossing a waterway
- Performing monthly audits on contractor crews
- Wrapping pipe, installing anodes and test points, performing socket heat fusions, and installing Electrofusion fittings and mechanical couplings as needed
- Assisting Gas System Planning and Design / Field Engineering with their gas expertise to ensure all construction and installation methods are compliant with Colorado Springs Utilities gas standards, as well as Federal, State, and local regulations regarding natural gas distribution systems
- Documenting and completing all gas infrastructure as-built maps by both handwritten and electronically, records and material balance sheets, and paperwork associated with new gas mainline extension projects while assuring that all gas contract crews are complying with contract specifications, turning in accurate bid unit sheets, and for negotiating in the field any changes as are appropriate
- Responding to exposed gas lines, researching, and taking appropriate action or providing direction to external customers as needed
Please note that the ability to work overtime with little to no warning is required for this position as needed.
Who You Are:
- Demonstrated gas construction experience (i.e., typically four or more years)
- Ability to explain and uphold gas standards and regulations to stakeholders
- Knowledge of Colorado Springs Utilities' gas standards, specifications, and requirements
- Experience pertaining to gas mainline and service stub installations and procedures; gas service line installations, tie-ins, and inspection procedures; performing job layouts, reading grade staking, acquiring proper materials, reconciling and closing out gas construction jobs (paperwork, gas service cards, detailed as-built maps)
- Completion of an approved gas apprenticeship program is valued

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts 20-50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 10-25 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
