Position Summary
The Patient Access Center is the central service hub for IU Health Physicians, providing essential health and clinical program information. The Specialist – Physician Referral Services plays a key role in coordinating referrals from IU Health Physicians and advanced practice providers to primary and specialty care practices. This position will be remote.
Under general supervision and in accordance with established policies, the Specialist is responsible for:
- Coordinating patient referrals efficiently and accurately.
- Making outbound calls to patients and physician offices to confirm referral preferences and appointment details.
- Handling inbound calls from the Referral/Appointment Navigation mainline with a high level of customer service.
- Working across multiple electronic healthcare systems to:
- Schedule appointments and register patients.
- Review and communicate health information via the EMR.
- Facilitate nurse triage access when needed.
- Provide immediate support and resolution for referral-related inquiries.
This role also supports the Referral Team as a subject matter resource within the Patient Access Center.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum 2 years of customer service experience; healthcare setting preferred.
- Experience in medical office referral coordination strongly desired.
- Proficiency in EMR systems (e.g., E-Centaurus, Cerner, Careweb).
- Familiarity with insurance precertification and referral management preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and confidentiality standards.
- Experience with multi-line phone systems and data entry.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet objectives.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
