JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Cardiovascular perfusionists are responsible for operating extracorporeal circulation equipment, such as the heart-lung machine, during an open-heart surgery or any other medical procedure in which it is necessary to artificially support or temporarily replace a patient's circulatory or respiratory function.
Requires in-depth conceptual and working knowledge acquired through deep experience in a particular job discipline. May also require familiarity in related disciplines and specialties. May lead projects of manageable risk or have accountability for ongoing activities or objectives. Commonly executes a wide range of complex and difficult tasks, requiring minimal guidance or supervision. Applies new perspectives to existing solutions. Serves as a key resource for colleagues. Careers may stabilize at this level for many years or until retirement.
Procedure- Designs and assembles extracorporeal circuits and equipment for cardiopulmonary bypass, left heart bypass, VAD, ECMO, HIPEC, veno-venous bypass, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and autologous blood recovery equipment. Maintains patient parameters per guidelines and as ordered by the physicians during CPB, MCS and autologous blood recovery procedures. Administers medications, anesthetic agents and blood products under the orders and supervision of a physician. Performs chemistry, blood gas, co-oximetry, and activated clotting time tests. Review all patient data prior to intervention to determine appropriate circuitry and equipment applications; collaborates with attending surgeon on the selection of circuit components and special patient requirements. Effectively communicates with cardiac surgeon, anesthesiologist, other perfusionists, and operating room personnel. Provides age-appropriate care to patients from the age of birth through 21 years and adult patients with congenital heart disease or MCS.
Documentation- Responsible for accurate and timely perfusion case data entry into perfusion database. Maintains accurate documentation of perfusion cases and departmental functions for efficient department operation.
Inventory- Familiar with entire disposable and cryogenic tissue inventory management process; includes inventory management, ordering, shipment tracking, receiving and tissue handling.
Operations- Must be able to operate, maintain, calibrate and perform quality control testing on all of the operating room point of care laboratory equipment as per institutional protocols and CLIA requirements. May coordinate with the Clinical Engineering department preventative maintenance and routine equipment checks of all perfusion related equipment. May be asked to maintain and monitor cryogenic storage unit for human tissue grafts. Participates in evaluating new perfusion equipment (i.e., hardware and disposables) to determine operational characteristics and therapeutic value.
Training & Education- Participates in clinical educational programs. Participates in continuing educational programs with physicians and other Perfusionists in an effort to advance medical and circulation technology. Maintains education in the field of perfusion through continuing education, literature, and seminars and applies this knowledge to the care of patients. Maintains currency in field through continuing education, literature and seminars. Implements this knowledge into the Cardiothoracic Surgery department.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related field. May require clinical license, certification or training
5+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Preferred: Experience with pediatric CPB, ECMO/MCS devices. AmSECTs Fellow of Pediatric Perfusion
Must demonstrate equivalent qualifications and competency.
Certified or eligible to sit for the certification exam by the ABCP
Must attain certification within the first 18 months of employment.
