Sr. Technical Program Manager, AI2 OLMo

Who You Are:

You are mission driven and excited to be a part of a team working with world class AI researchers to build state-of-the-art AI technology for the advancement of science and the common good. You are detail oriented, move fast, and are able to find effective ways forward in the face of ambiguity. You are an excellent communicator, and can ask the right questions and facilitate the right discussions to ensure smooth releases. You have a strong technical foundation, and preferably experience with ML platforms or ML-driven products. This role requires effective collaboration with people in many different functions – management, engineering, research, legal, ethics, design, PR – so ideally you are someone who likes learning from different domains and translating between them. 

Who We Are: 

AllenNLP is a team of researchers and engineers working to improve NLP systems' performance and accountability, and advance scientific methodologies for evaluating and understanding those systems. AllenNLP delivers high-impact research of our own and masterfully-engineered open-source tools to accelerate NLP research around the world.  Previously the team has released impactful projects such as ELMo, which demonstrated the power of language model pretraining, and the AllenNLP library, a framework for experimenting with model architectures that received over 1000 citations and is used in thousands of public projects on GitHub.  Now, the AllenNLP team, in collaboration with other teams across AI2,  is embarking on the creation of an open, state-of-the-art generative language model: AI2 OLMo. The goal is to share a high quality and open language model that will provide an avenue for people in the AI research community to carry out deeper and more reproducible research on language models.

Your Next Challenge:

We are looking for an experienced Senior Technical Program Manager to drive strategy, definition, and delivery for our open, state-of-the-art generative language model: AI2 OLMo. 

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to understand and communicate overall program status, identify and resolve emerging issues, and coordinate key initiatives.

  • Develop, implement, and iterate on program management procedures, such as our model release processes and syncing cadences.

  • Partner with project directors, research, engineering, and project impact coordinators to run regular planning meetings and set strategy.

  • Bring clarity to ambiguous questions on scope, priority and success criteria. 

  • Create canonical documentation of plans, schedules and processes, driving consistency and alignment across teams.

  • Keep project documentation up to date, clear, and easily accessible.

  • Report to senior leadership on program health and key decisions.

  • Coordinate with grant requirements and finance teams, and facilitate external partnerships.

What You’ll Need:

  • Exposure to machine learning practices and development, either via formal training or work experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Proven ability to build strong relationships with varied stakeholders around the organization.

  • Ability to operate autonomously in an environment that feels much more like a start up than a large tech company.

Education/Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in technical program management.

  • 3+ years of experience managing cross-functional and/or cross-team projects.

Preferred

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field. 

  • Experience with external partnerships. 

  • Expertise in deep learning and NLP in particular.
