Department Summary

The Office of Health Professions provides specialized advising and support to students interested in pursuing various health careers.

Position Overview

Responsible for advising and providing professional development to students interested in health careers. Advises pre-health students on the courses required for entry into health professional schools, the timeline for applying to such programs, and the characteristics of a competitive application.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong presentation, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills. Advanced academic advising expertise. Ability to integrate and analyze information and develop reports. Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications. Ability to effectively manage projects and work teams. Ability to communicate effectively with populations verbally and in writing with internal and external groups in a variety of settings. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with advising students interested in health professions. Experience with advising students on course selection and/or degree plans.

Job Duties

  • Advises students in person, or through e-mail and phone correspondence, on the requirements for health professional schools and the classes necessary for admission; this includes advising students on the transferability of courses, taken at or outside of the university. Advises students on how to develop strong applications to health professional schools. Uses provided advising technology and resources to ensure accurate and timely advisement. 
  • Provides professional development for students, which includes conducting mock interviews and reviewing professional school application essays. 
  • Oversees outreach and recruitment efforts for the team and serves as the administrative lead for certain programs and events. 
  • Conducts seminars for current and incoming students. Assists with freshmen and transfer orientations by presenting information about health professions. Represents the Office of Health Professions at UNT recruiting events when necessary, which include
