About this opportunity:
At Freenome, we are seeking a Director of Software Engineering to build and manage a team building the next generation of Freenome’s engineering platform to combat cancer and other age-related diseases. The ideal candidate is a servant-leader that is comfortable managing a growing team while continuing to make an individual impact and have a high sense of ownership. This person is responsible for leading the development of our platform and expand the talent base of your team while setting up Engineering and Freenome as a whole for future success. As part of a dynamic, flexible company you will be adapting to rapid technological progress and change, and help your Engineers building the platform do the same. You are passionate about building a strong and collaborative team, and you will have a significant impact on the continued growth of a high profile technology organization that is changing the landscape on early cancer detection.
The role reports to our Senior Director, Software Engineering.
What you’ll do:
- Supervise training and development of Software Engineering staff, working with leadership to establish unified principles for software development at Freenome
- Contribute to the development of strategic and tactical roadmaps that address business needs, efficiencies, product innovation and revenue
- Evaluate your team's performance, utilizing our review and promotion process through our comprehensive leveling matrix
- Improve your team's performance, charting out personal growth plans for direct reports
- Support recruiting engineering personnel, technical staffing, project team formation, and organizational design as the team scales
- Work with project managers and customers to ensure the delivery and success of Engineering's software
- Help drive the vision & strategy of Freenome's technical roadmap with an eye toward improving all of Engineering’s culture and execution
- Assure the availability, scalability, and performance of application software your team delivers
- Build out your team's feature and product roadmap in support of the company's long-term milestones
- Set the technical direction and review results from engineers
- Aid in the translation of business requirements into technical needs and actions
Must haves:
- BS, MS or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field; or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience
- 5+ years of experience in engineering leadership and management
- 3+ years of programming experience with a track record of building and deploying software as part of a high-functioning team
- Proven expertise in building large-scale applications
- Experience with Agile sprint planning
- Scrum Lead experience
- A demonstrated ability to structure, grow, and optimize a team for execution, including attracting top talent and filling in gaps in the existing team quickly to accommodate growth
- Experience with project management and prioritization, risk management, problem-solving, and resource planning
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong leadership and collaboration skills
