Provides direct nursing care to patients at the Mays Cancer Center.
Provide nursing care to hematology stem cell transplant and cellular therapy patients across the adult and geriatric spectrum in the outpatient setting. Demonstrate competency across the continuum of malignant hematology and stem cell transplantation. Deliver high-quality care across all domains of practice when caring for patients receiving cellular therapies. Develop and implement an individualized plan of utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Ensures enhanced patient outcomes through effective communication, collaboration, mentorship, and effective delegation in the exercise of his/her independent judgment.
• Demonstrates advanced skills in the delivery of physical examinations of patients, performing complex medical testing and providing interpretations of results, consulting with physicians and implementing treatment plan; administers medications and injections as needed.
• Ensures the clinic flow runs smoothly and provides supervision of the assigned Medical Assistant; works closely with assigned scheduler to ensure referrals, follow up appointments, diagnostic tests, etc. are scheduled accordingly.
• Triages patient calls and works closely with call center team members.
• Assists and arranges for hospital admissions as needed.
• Follows-up on diagnostic tests, labs and ensures they are reported to the medical provider.
• Refers patients as needed to appropriate specialist, consults and collaborates with other members of the health care team, provides daily wound care as needed, schedules follow up appointments, weekly check appointments, and procedure appointments.
• Educates patients and family members on the therapy process.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.
• Formally trained in the understanding of hematopoietic stem cell transplant and other cellular therapies, including disease states, transplant immunology, sources and procurement of stem cells, components of patient evaluation, education, conditioning regimens, stem cell reinfusion, engraftment and recovery, acute effects of transplant, discharge, and follow-up care.
• Competent in the administration of cellular therapy products, including hematopoietic stem cells, and immune effector cells, and other cellular therapies.
• Competent in the safe administration of high dose chemotherapy, innovative cellular therapies, immunotherapies, stem cell reinfusions, blood products, growth factors, hydration, and associated medications
• Competent in providing care for immunocompromised patients with complex needs.
• Competent in the administration of cellular therapy products and signs of emergency and higher-level care needed
Expereince: Five (5) years of professional nursing experience is required.
Education:
Associates Degree, BSN is preferred.
Licenses and certification's:
RN Registered Nurse State Licensure Required.
BLS Basic Life Support Required
