Onsite. This position requires an employee to be on-site at Warren, Michigan on a full-time basis.

Role

We are seeking a Laboratory Systems Engineer with a controls engineering focus to join the EMTS (Engineering Maintenance & Technical Support) team. This role will support the development/validation and troubleshooting of equipment and systems within the Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center (WBCIC). The WBCIC environment is exciting, fast paced and quickly evolving as GM works to refine battery cell technology and manufacturing processes. This role includes design and delivery of new manufacturing and test equipment, procedures and processes, as well as troubleshooting and repair/modification of existing manufacturing and test equipment.  A strong analytical and problem-solving mindset is key to accomplishing objectives and assignments with the support of management and technicians. In addition to leading controls engineering tasks, you will work as an integral member of a cross-functional product development team with skillsets in the following areas: electrical and mechanical systems, controls systems, prototype development, troubleshooting/diagnosis and repair, as well as testing. You will be creating and developing standard work for repair tasks for new and existing equipment.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Be the technical support for battery cell manufacturing equipment with a focus on controls engineering tasks (troubleshooting, repair and modifications) to assist engineering and operations teams in their day to day activities.

  • Follow all corporate safety standards and site safety policies (g-Risk, g-Comply, PTP, Lockout, chemical management, etc.)

  • Effectively work both independently as well as with multi-disciplined teams to understand functional requirements and implement appropriate solutions from a controls engineering perspective.

  • Generate technical solutions for current and future projects & equipment from a controls engineering perspective.

  • In addition to controls engineering, provide support of mechanical and electrical engineering tasks as required.

  • Assist technicians in creation of standard work for maintenance tasks as well as repair tasks, including Pre-Task Plans.

  • Understand and work to timelines and milestones for projects/assignments to meet the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers.

  • Utilize strong oral and written communication skills to communicate complex material.

  • Utilize strong organization skills and ability to prioritize tasks.

  • Develop the ability to navigate ambiguity and effectively manage change in a fast-paced environment.

  • Focus on continuous improvement for existing equipment and processes.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a major in electrical or mechatronics engineering, or equivalent automation controls engineering experience.

  • Proficiency in industrial networking protocols – Profibus, Profinet, TCP/IP and EthernetIP

  • HMI- Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi and/or Beckhoff experience

  • PLC- Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi and/or Beckhoff experience

  • General understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation for mechanical, electrical and controls systems.

  • Experience in troubleshooting complex systems to resolve multifaceted issues.

  • Ability to work with a high level of autonomy in a complex environment, managing multiple projects by establishing priorities and deliverables with minimal supervision.

  • Competency in creating and interpreting technical drawings.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 2+ years of Controls experience in a Manufacturing environment

  • Knowledge of battery cell manufacturing and/or testing process

  • Experience with Vision Cameras

  • Experience in launching new equipment and processes

  • Experience working with equipment suppliers and installation contractors

  • Familiarity with GM Workplace Safety Systems Elements (SCM, MOC, SIF, Risk Identification, PTP)

  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
