Overview:

The Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an External Dosimetry Program Manager within the Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services Group. ORNL is a world leader in advanced science and technology research involving several nonreactor nuclear facilities, accelerators, and the High Flux Isotope Reactor which involve a complex range of internal and external radiological hazards that are managed to protect more than 3,000 researchers and operations staff involved in the Nuclear Research and Isotope Production Mission. The Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services Group is responsible for maintaining Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) accreditation for the external dosimetry program as an essential part of the ORNL Radiological Protection Program. This position is responsible for the management of the External Dosimetry Program (EDP) and for ensuring that it meets the standards of the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP), specified in DOE-STD-1111-2018 and DOE-STD-1095-2018.  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The EDP Manager is the individual with the overall technical responsibility for the External Dosimetry Program at ORNL. The EDP Manager is responsible for oversite of day-to-day operations of the External Dosimetry Laboratory and Distribution Center, including supervision of EDP staff.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Direct the generation, revision, periodic review, distribution, and maintenance of EDP controlled documents

  • Ensure that the EDP Quality Assurance Program meets the requirements of DOELAP and the applicable ORNL requirements

  • Direct and provide technical guidance to staff members for conducting technical studies to improve performance and to document compliance with applicable regulatory requirements

  • Ensure that all personnel receive appropriate training, and assign tasks commensurate with their training and qualifications

  • Interface with IT support personnel in the development, upgrade, and maintenance of the personnel dosimetry database and its applications

  • Ensure the timely preparation and processing of dosimeters

  • Review and approve dosimeter processing results and prevent the assignment of anomalous results

  • Ensure regulatory reporting is completed as required

  • Ensure compliance with DOELAP

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in health physics, physics, nuclear engineering, radiation protection or related technical field.

  • Eight or more years relevant experience, including 2 years of supervisory/team lead experience

  • Demonstrated technical understanding of external dosimetry principles

  • Practical professional experience and working knowledge in one or more of the following:  radiation detection/counting instrumentation, statistical evaluation, TLD processing

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced science or engineering degree in a directly related discipline (e.g., health physics, physics, radiochemistry, etc.) is a plus, and will be given appropriate consideration in lieu of experience.

  • Ability to perform or evaluate complex spreadsheet analyses

  • Understanding of applicable Federal regulations including 10 CFR 835

  • Experience with the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) process
