About the role

This job provides individualized, direct patient care of assigned patients under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. Assists in the implementation of the delivery of health care services by ensuring rooms are clean and well stocked, preparing patient for exam, obtaining allergy & medical history, dilating patient's eyes as required. Assists fellow employees in providing the highest quality personalized patient care and maintains a positive work relationship with the health care team. Provides care and service with individuals of all assigned age groups.

Education 

Required - High School diploma or equivalent


Work Experience

Required - None

Preferred - 1 year experience working in an ophthalmic care setting


Certifications

Required - Current JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant

Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer and/or mainframe terminal and multi-line telephone skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively and professionally work with people from all backgrounds.
  • Excellent judgment, organization skills, decision-making and delegating skills.
  • Ability to and experience working with and maintaining confidential information.
  • Ability to and experience working in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to use equipment, perform tests and read results, as needed, including: visual acuity, extra ocular motility, pupil evaluation, confrontational fields, color vision, stereo vision, tonopen tonometry, lensometry, keratometry.
  • Ability to assist with removal and insertion of contact lenses.


Job Duties

  • Supports Provider/Physician to ensure readiness for patient.
  • Supports Provider/Physician during encounter with patient.
  • Supports Provider/Physician following patient visit.
  • Provides excellent telephone communication.
  • Completes appropriate documentation.
  • Conducts professional development and maintains required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training and credentials.
  • Achieves Nurse/Asst percentile rank in patient satisfaction scores.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other related duties as required.
