Non-Duke Student/Intern - Kubernetes and Systems Operations

SSI Systems Fall 2024 Internship – Kubernetes and Systems Operations

Primary responsibilities include assisting with Kubernetes, AWX and Ansible automation and deployment systems across the SSI Systems group.

Responsibilities 

1. Assist Kubernetes administrators with deployments across campus. 
   • Deploy nodes using OKD in the Duke Datacenters
   • Help configure and improve K3S services
   • Explore and document Azure based Kubernetes environments
   • Assist with configuration and deployment of RKE software to help manage Kubernetes clusters
2. Assist Linux Systems Team with automation efforts
   • Help development Ansible/AWX playbooks for operational tasks
   • Develop documentation around Ansible and AWX usage
   • Other automation efforts as needed 
3. Assist with onboarding of projects to the Kubernetes environments
   • Work with individuals and teams across OIT to help migrate items to a Kubernetes platform
   • Document best practices, as well as pitfalls for future migrations

Required Outcomes 

1. Improvements to configuration and documentation of the AWX/Ansible environment

1. Improvement of existing documentation for deploying K3S clusters
2. Write up of different Kubernetes offerings (OKD, K3S, AKS) and what advantages they bring to the group 

Required Skills 

1. Basic proficiency with Linux Container technology (Docker, podman, etc). 
2. Basic proficiency with the Git distributed version control system 
3. Basic proficiency with a programing/scripting environment (Go, Python, Shell)
4. Basic proficiency deploying applications to a Kubernetes environment
