UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN FINNISH
There are two positions open. Both will be filled by 1 August 2025 or as agreed.
University lecturer in Finnish language and culture, permanent contract
The university lecturer will be responsible alongside other teachers for teaching in Finnish language and culture within the Bachelor’s Programme in the Languages and Literatures of Finland and the Master’s Programme in Finnish and Finno-Ugrian Languages. The duties also include other teaching in the discipline and in scholarly writing. The university lecturer must also carry out independent scholarly research, supervise and examine theses, and attend to administrative duties as jointly agreed. The appointee is expected to have experience of teaching Finnish language and culture at Finnish or international universities.
University lecturer in Finnish, fixed-term contract from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2028
The university lecturer will be responsible alongside other teachers for teaching in Finnish within the Bachelor’s Programme in the Languages and Literatures of Finland and the Master’s Programme in Finnish and Finno-Ugrian Languages. Their duties broadly encompass teaching in scholarly writing and writing skills in the Study Track in Finnish and the Faculty of Arts as a whole, as well as the opportunity to collaborate with other degree programmes. Teaching responsibilities include the speciality of Finnish as a second language as well as, among other things, teaching related to linguistic discourse research and the development of standard Finnish. The university lecturer must also carry out independent scholarly research, supervise and examine theses, and attend to administrative duties as jointly agreed.
APPOINTMENT CRITERIA
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, appointees to university lectureships shall hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality research-based teaching and supervise theses. When assessing applicant qualifications, attention is paid to scholarly publications and other research results of academic value, teaching experience, pedagogical training, ability to produce learning material and other teaching merits. Research qualifications and teaching experience in the field of Finnish as a second language are considered an asset, as is administrative experience of university teaching and research.
Diverse language skills benefit the completion of the duties associated with the positions. Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish; in these cases, Finnish. WHAT WE OFFER
The salary will be based on levels 5–7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointees will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The appointees’ gross monthly salary will range from €3,700 to €4,700, depending on their qualifications and experience. The positions include a six-month trial period.
