About the Company:Pivot Health, a Healthcare.com company, is seeking a Back End Technical Lead to join our Insurtech Platform Team. At Pivot Health, we work with partners across the healthcare and insurance industries to craft products for people who don’t fit in a box. Through our network of agents and our direct-to-consumer website, we sell specialized individual health insurance plans and other products for people who are not a good fit for traditional employer-sponsored group plans or government-sponsored plans.
As a Back End Technical Lead, you will play a crucial role in shaping the technical direction of our insurtech platform. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining robust and scalable back-end solutions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Java or Kotlin and Spring Boot, extensive experience with cloud platforms like AWS, and a proven track record of working in a DevOps environment. Candidates should also have experience taking greenfield projects from 0 to 1 and scaling from there. Although this is an individual contributor role with no people management responsibilities, you will be expected to act as a formal and informal leader on the team, exemplifying the qualities of a good engineer and helping to create a culture of high quality, high performance, and high expectations.
Responsibilities:Technical Leadership: Lead a team of talented developers in the design and implementation of high-quality software solutions. Ensure code quality, performance, and maintainability through best practices, code reviews, and continuous improvement.Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members using techniques like pair programming and code review, fostering a collaborative and innovative development environment.Architecture and Design: Architect and design scalable and maintainable back-end systems, ensuring adherence to best practices and industry standards. Collaborate with business stakeholders to define and implement system requirements.Development: Hands-on development of back-end services from scratch using Java, Spring Boot, and relational databases like PostgreSQL.Quality: A focus on high quality using practices like test-driven development (TDD).Cloud Platform Expertise: Utilize your expertise in cloud platforms, particularly AWS, to design, deploy, and manage scalable, resilient, and secure solutions.DevOps Culture: Own your services in production, taking responsibility for their deployment and operation using the tools provided by our infrastructure team. Take a “shift left” approach to quality and security, taking ownership of them up front.Innovation: Drive a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to introduce new and relevant practices.
Qualifications:7+ years of experience as a back-end developer with a focus on Java and Spring Boot (or related languages like Kotlin or Scala).Experience working with relational databases like PostgreSQL.Extensive experience working with cloud platforms, particularly AWS.Strong understanding of DevOps principles and experience working in a DevOps environment.Previous experience in leading and mentoring development teams.Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.Experience with agile development methodologies like Scrum or kanban.Experience working in startups and on greenfield projects is a plus.Experience in the insurance or healthcare industry is a plus.Ability to meet in person at our office in New Haven, CT, 1-2 days per week for planning and collaboration.BenefitsOpportunity to work from homeExcellent work environmentMedical, dental, and vision with 100% company paid premiums for the employeeUp to 15 days of paid time off10 company observed holidays8 weeks of paid parental leave401k plan with company matchLife insuranceProfessional growth opportunityMost importantly, an inclusive company culture established by an incredible team!
