The Role

Burkland Associates is seeking a seasoned professional to join as the Managing Director, Tax Practice. The Tax Practice, under this role, encompasses both direct and indirect tax, along with tax consulting. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in public accounting tax, with a focus on corporate taxes and startup environments. This leadership role demands a unique blend of technical expertise, entrepreneurial spirit, and strategic thinking.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Client Management:

• Oversee and manage a diverse book of business, focusing on Corporate and startup, seed through C stage clients.

• Maintain strong client relations and cross-sell services within the assigned group of clients.

• Maintain active communication with clients to manage expectations, ensure satisfaction, meet deadlines, and effectively lead change efforts.

2. Team Leadership:

• Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing tax consulting team.

• Collaborate with team members to enhance their technical skills and promote a culture of continuous learning.

• Be the internal advisor on technical matters as a Subject Matter Expert.

3. Strategic Decision-Making:

• Collaborate with leadership to make strategic decisions that align with the business goals and vision.

• Proactively identify opportunities to expand and improve the tax consulting practice.

4. Entrepreneurial Mindset:

• Embrace a more entrepreneurial mindset, demonstrating the ability to take calculated risks and make swift decisions.

• Manage stressful situations, with resilience and efficiency.

5. Knowledge and Expertise:

• Stay informed about changes in tax regulations, industry trends, and best practices.

• Broad tax knowledge. 

About You

• Minimum 15 years in public accounting tax, preferably from a regional firm with a focus on corporate and VC-funded startup environments.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting with CPA or JD is a must. 

• Preferably Master’s in Taxation, LLM in Taxation. 

• Excellent analytical, technical, and tax accounting/technology skills.

• Strong knowledge of US GAAP, direct, and indirect tax compliance and consulting.

• Knowledge of R&D Tax Credits, tax planning, and M&A. 

• Proven experience in leading and developing high-performing teams.

• Ability to navigate uncertainties, take calculated risks, and find creative solutions.

• Excellent communication skills to provide clear and practical advice to clients and team members.

• Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic decision-making processes.

• Ability to quickly adapt to changing situations and find effective solutions.
