Senior Staff Engineering Manager, (Containers OS Language Runtimes) REMOTE

As a Senior Staff Engineering Manager, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, providing technical leadership to innovate, design, and optimize container runtimes, operating systems, and language runtime environments. You will drive the strategic technical roadmap, ensuring the delivery of high-quality products and unlocking new engineering capabilities. Additionally, you will maintain GEICO's operating systems, contribute to the upstream Linux community, and optimize runtimes for Java, GoLang, Node.js, Python, and .NET environments. 

Position Responsibilities

As a Senior Manager, you will:

• Work with your senior leadership to address project dependencies, negotiate and estimate incremental delivery dates for milestones with the stakeholder community, and deliver projects on time

• Ownership of the end-to-end delivery of team strategy and platforms

• Identify and raise appropriate project risks, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable solutions or alternatives

• Understand how requirements and design choices may impact systems across multiple areas

• Report on your team’s progress for project and other key metrics, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable ideas for areas to further improve or influence product or project delivery

• Initiate and support performance evaluation of team members

• Cultivate a culture that motivates all levels of performers to higher levels of achievement

• Build and maintain relationships with your team members to support an environment of trust

• Develop the team budget and be accountable for reporting on results achieved at regular intervals

• Significantly contribute to the team planning process to include surfacing associate level proposals

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in partnering with engineering teams and transferring research to production.

• Strong familiarity with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code practices.

• Proven expertise in designing, deploying, and optimizing container runtimes, operating systems, and language runtime environments.

• Deep knowledge of Podman, containerd, and related container orchestration platforms.

• Proficiency in operating systems, especially Linux, and managing end-to-end container image lifecycles.

• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment.

• Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development lifecycle.

• Experience in building resilient, scalable, and efficient systems architecture and design.

• Fluency in DevOps concepts, Cloud Architecture, and operational frameworks.

• Specialization in at least one modern language such as Go or Rust Strong problem-solving abilities and proactive approach to security risks and vulnerabilities.

• Excellent communication skills to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Experience

• 6+ years coding experience

• 5+ years of significant experience building scalable, fault-tolerant, and robust products and platforms

• 5+ years of hands-on work experience supervising 10+ personnel in a technical environment

• 2+ years of experience with automated testing including Unit, Integration, and End-to-End functional testing

Education

• Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field, or equivalent experience

 

Annual Salary

$150,000.00 - $300,000.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
