About the Role
We are seeking a Restroom Cleaner/Day Porter (Part-time) to provide janitorial services at the IRS New Carrollton Facility. Under general supervision, the Day Porter performs general custodial duties which may include but is not limited to restroom cleaning, office cleaning, recycling, spill clean-up, cleaning common areas, and litter removal and recycling during a customer’s normal business hours. Employees in this job class use proper materials and methods to assure facilities are clean and free of safety hazards. This job class requires knowledge of custodial practices, equipment, supplies and procedures; the ability to perform quality work in a safe manner; and strong communication skills in order to interact with customers.
Responsibilities
- Clean, dust, and wipe furniture.
- Sweep, mop, or vacuum floors.
- Empty and clean wastebaskets, trash containers and cigarette urns.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms/bathrooms using established practices and procedures. Refill restroom dispensers.
- Clean cafeteria and breakroom areas. Stock utensils, napkins, plates, cups, coffee and related supplies. Make coffee and/or set up snacks for events.
- Assist with the setup for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
- Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
- Wash accessible interior and exterior windows. Clean blinds.
- Respond to customer requests for cleaning spills and other emergency clean-ups according to established procedures.
- Respond to customer requests for service such as cleaning locked offices not serviceable at night.
- Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies.
- Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
- Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
- Attend safety meetings and other related meetings.
- Take classes as required in cleaning methods and techniques, new products.
- Handle recycling materials.
- Call in work orders.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements
Required Experience and Skills
- One or more years of custodial work experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively and respond to questions and requests from customers and others.
- Ability to utilize a wide array of custodial chemicals, general cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment (vacuum, backpack vacuum, cardboard bailer).
- Effective written communication skills using appropriate business English.
- Computer literacy to use business software, the Internet, enter data/retrieve data.
- Human relations skills to build effective working relationships.
- Demonstrated organizational, problem solving and common-sense skills.
- Abide by the Federal Drug-Free workplace policy.
- Must be able to pass background check requirements as set by clients.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record may be required.
- Ability to obtain government clearance.
Education and Training
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.

- Climbing ladders and/or step stools.
- May also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, goggles, face shields, slip resistant close toed work shoes, and hearing protection.
