The Role

As an Engineering Manager, your main responsibility will be leading and managing our talented software development team while still being heavily involved in technical aspects. You will be integral in building Node.js and React web applications that are vital to our conversational commerce platform. Your contributions will range from enhancing our merchant dashboard to optimizing our real-time conversation management service, all aimed at creating an impeccable user experience for our customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the architecture and development of high-performing Node.js web applications and APIs.
  • Enforce the production of reusable, testable, and production-grade code that adheres to industry best practices.
  • Architect and build scalable microservices in collaboration with your team.
  • Collaborate with product teams to conceive and deliver software solutions for business challenges.
  • Implement and monitor CI/CD pipelines in the development process.
  • Make use of thoroughly tested open-source libraries when feasible.
  • Develop comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Guide and mentor your team members in choosing appropriate technologies, data structures, design patterns, and algorithms for given problems.
  • Ensure the development of robust unit and integration tests with high code coverage.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement within the team.
  • Handle people management aspects like career development, performance reviews, and conflict resolution for your team.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a similar field.
  • 9+ years of experience in software development, with some years in a managerial or leadership role.
  • Technical expertise in JavaScript / TypeScript and Node.js, including frameworks like Express or Koa.
  • Proficiency in backend languages and frameworks like Ruby, Ruby on Rails, Python, Django, or PHP.
  • Familiarity with front-end web frameworks like React, Angular, Vue.js, and jQuery.
  • Expertise in writing and debugging SQL queries.
  • Experience in designing database schemas and migrating them over time.
  • Proficiency with relational databases like MySQL or PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases like MongoDB.
  • Understanding of system design and web application architecture.
  • Experience with asynchronous programming (promises, async / await).
  • Proficiency in building and consuming REST and GraphQL APIs.
  • Knowledge of web application development using JavaScript for all levels of the stack.
  • Familiarity with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Proficiency with Test Driven Development (TDD).
  • Proficiency with Git, GitFlow, and using services like Github or Bitbucket.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You'll need to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical team members and stakeholders and facilitate effective communication within your team.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and lead a team. This includes conflict resolution skills, performance management, and fostering a positive work environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and their application in managing software development.
  • A continuous learning mindset and the ability to stay updated with the latest technologies and industry trends. Encourage this attitude among your team members as well.
  • Experience with hiring and building diverse, high-performing teams.
  • A customer-focused mindset to understand and prioritize customer needs in all decision-making processes.

The expected salary for this role is $208,000-$234,000 depending on skills and experiences.
