About the role

Description

The Center for Research Computing (CRC), a unit within Notre Dame Research (NDR) seeks a scientist to pursue a research and development portfolio focused on the development of secure next generation cyberinfrastructure tools and software in line with the related requirements for complex workflows for computational science. It is expected that prototypes will demonstrate capability and be designed for future transition into production environments. The scientist will also be an active participant and regular voice in communities of practice focused on the same. This position utilizes a wide variety of computer engineering, computer science and cloud engineering and skills in order to meet a broad range of domain specific (physics, biology, etc..) research collaborators’ cyberinfrastructure requirements.

This professor will work with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, applied mathematicians, computer scientists, domain scientists and community/commercial partners. Applicants seeking to maintain a research program in a specific scientific domain may be able to negotiate a concurrent appointment in an additional academic unit. This individual must actively contribute to community knowledge through peer reviewed publications and conference presentations. This hire is intended to help grow and provide strategic direction to the Center’s interdisciplinary research involving cyberinfrastructure for complex scientific workflows.

The responsibilities include:

● Work toward enabling researcher and practitioner collaboration to accelerate cyberinfrastructure prototypes for use and adoption by industry, government, NGOs and peer academic partners. ● Conduct applied research related to current technology trends and emerging technologies. This

includes but is not limited to leading peer reviewed publications and conference presentations. ● Develop successful grant proposals to support major activities of the CRC in the domain of cyberinfrastructure, in collaboration with CRC, ND and external faculty.

● Engage, organize, and collaborate with ND’s CRC, OIT and NDR leadership and stakeholders in the operation of cyberinfrastructure in line with cybersecurity best practices.

● Collaborate with national research cyberinfrastructure efforts, such as, but not limited to NSF ACCESS, DoE ASCR and DoD HPCMP, to identify and implement best practices related to cyberinfrastructure at Notre Dame.

● Mentor undergraduate and graduate students researching scientific cyberinfrastructure.

Qualifications

Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for effective research collaboration. The position will focus on developing a scientific cyberinfrastructure research portfolio requiring the ability to apply the following skills and technologies. The strongest candidates will have deep expertise in the cyberinfrastructure with an established track record of collaborating with domain experts for specific computational requirements.

Qualifications

1. Demonstrated experience collaboratively developing software to facilitate complex scientific workflows on highly distributed (nationally or globally) and heterogeneous cyberinfrastructure. 2. Experience with workflow optimization for networking, IO and related resource bottlenecks. 3. Software engineering skills relative to common scripting languages (Python, Bash, etc…) and

computational codes (C, C , etc..) to interface with relevant components of operating systems on servers, switches, desktops/laptops and mobile devices.

4. Experience with US Federal cyberinfrastructure programs such as those in NSF, DoD, DoE and NIH. 5. Ph.D. in computer science, or a science discipline involving a significant amount of s
