Summary/Purpose of Position
Drives the advancement of BD Interventional (BDI) Surgery Business Unit’s sustainable growth and category leadership objectives by identifying and executing on external initiatives focused on growth within Surgery’s platforms and strategic adjacent markets. The individual should be prepared to lead cross-functional work on acquisitions and licensing opportunities, while independently supporting VP, SDI on ad hoc projects. This role requires the individual to have a strong marketing, finance or technical background and to see beyond the current portfolio of products in Surgery to understand the broader strategic needs of the Surgery BU.
This role is responsible for identifying, assessing, and conducting diligence on new business opportunities that are in line with the overall business and strategic growth objectives for Surgery. The leader works collaboratively with other internal functions to build compelling growth strategies based on deep understanding of customer needs and market trends. Additionally, this position will be accountable for assessment of market potential, financial viability, technical relevance, and proprietary and legal implications of potential new business opportunities. Furthermore, they are responsible for completing financial models, preparing and presenting opportunities to senior leaders, due diligence of targets, and integration planning activities.
Essential Duties and Position Responsibilities
Ownership of maintaining an up-to-date business development pipeline for Surgery with a mix of large and smaller tuck-in opportunities across all categories
Leading the entire acquisition process, including working with Corporate Development and Finance teams to build the business model, developing strategic business case for presentation to the Corporate Development Steering Team (CDST), leading the cross-functional diligence effort, providing regular updates to the Steering Team for active projects
Within core and adjacent markets, lead market landscapes to understand current state, standard of care, competitive environment, barriers to adoption and unmet needs. Use output of this market assessment to develop market models to support business models
Represent BDI Surgery in initial discussions with potential acquisition targets
Assist in developing negotiation strategy for external targets
Lead integration planning for deals that enter the execution phase
Prepare Annual Strategic Review (ASR) and Corporate New Product Development (NPD) review materials related to the Business Development pipeline
Strong collaboration with platforms, R&D, medical affairs, regulatory, and SDI team members
Work with members of SDI teams at other Business Units and Corporate to share best practices, build networks, conduct assessments across business units or segments and develop opportunities
Manage a team, creating a culture that exemplifies the BD Way

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills Required
Bachelor’s degree required with M.B.A., Master’s degree, or other advanced degree a plus
Minimum of 10 years of experience in the medical device industry within a combination of marketing, strategy, business development and product development roles. Customer facing and surgical device experience is a plus
Experience leading cross-functional teams and/or influencing decisions without direct ownership
Experience building complex market models, forecasting and scenario planning
Ability to understand new technologies and/or surgical techniques and envision how they would align with the needs of the business unit
Strong collaboration and influencing skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong business acumen with the ability to develop financial analysis skills
