The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s City Distribution Division (Water Department) is responsible for directing approximately 322 employees in the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system within the City and County of San Francisco. These activities include, but are not limited to: operating and maintaining 11 pump stations, 13 reservoirs, 9 storage tanks, and other ancillary appurtenances and equipment; installing, repairing and maintaining over one thousand miles of water distribution mains including service connections and meters; four water systems comprised of the Potable, Emergency Fire Water System (EFWS), Recycled and Groundwater;  engineering and designing new main and feeder extensions; managing over 1,000 acres of city owned property and rights-of-ways; and responding to all two-alarm or greater fires to assist the Fire Department in maintaining adequate water volume and consistent pressure while fighting fires.

Job Description

Essential Duties:

  • Maintains, repairs, overhauls, and services heavy-duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment using hand tools, power tools and machine tools such as lathes, drill presses, grinders, boring bars, valves refining tools and other machine tools.
  • Designs, fabricates, and welds parts.
  • Maintains records of equipment mileage, service/repair logs, materials and parts logs, and equipment and parts orders.
  • Responds to incoming emergency calls and may go to the site of the breakdown; may tow vehicles.
  • Inspects, tests, and reviews vehicles and equipment as part of the preventive maintenance program.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions using test equipment, manufacturers specifications and repair manuals, and observation both in the shop and in the field in order to determine needed repairs.
  • Orders supplies, parts, and materials necessary for the maintenance, repair and servicing of equipment and vehicles.
  • Drives city vehicles and operates equipment to diagnose malfunctions and to conduct final inspection of work completed. May go to the site of the breakdown; may tow vehicles.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring:

  1. HDIM Smog License
  2. Hydraulic/Hydrostatic system diagnosis and repair
  3. Engine Aftertreatment DOC/DPF and SCR system diagnosis and repair
  4. 48 months of journey experience working on diesel vehicles and equipment
