Assistant/Associate Clinical-Track Professor, Flint Physical Therapy Department, College of Health Sciences (Hybrid)

Be at the forefront of change and become part of the innovative and forward-thinking academic team at the University of Michigan-Flint’s Physical Therapy Department in the rapidly expanding College of Health Sciences! The Physical Therapy Department is seeking applications for a 12-month faculty position as a clinical-track assistant or associate professor with expertise across the physical therapy spectrum with an emphasis in neurological, orthopedics and/or geriatric physical therapy. This faculty member will teach in the Professional (entry-level) Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (DPT), and if appropriate, the PhD in PT program. Rank is commensurate with experience and academic credentials. The faculty member will participate in teaching, service and scholarship in accordance with UM-Flint faculty guidelines. This position is a 12-month, 100% effort faculty position with a projected start date of August 1, 2026.

The UM-Flint Physical Therapy Department offers two outstanding programs including a professional DPT program and a PhD in Physical Therapy program. The Physical Therapy Department at the UM-Flint prepares accomplished physical therapist practitioners, researchers, and educators through best practices in teaching and learning and utilization of high-impact teaching practices including inter-professional education, high-tech media labs and simulations, and hands-on experiential learning involving patients/clients from the student-led pro bono health service known as HEART (Health Equity, Access, Research, and Teaching). The Physical Therapy Department has dedicated research space with state of the art equipment. 

The Physical Therapy Department is a part of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) located within the UM-Flint system. UM-Flint is a regional institution in a revitalized urban setting located along the riverfront in downtown Flint, Michigan. As one of three campuses of the University of Michigan, we serve commuting and residential undergraduate and graduate students, offering over 100 undergraduate and 60 graduate degrees. The UM-Flint campus is known for quality education, low faculty-to-student ratios, and its collegial environment. 

Responsibilities

Teaching

• Provide course instruction based on expertise in physical therapist practice and needs of the Physical Therapy Department
• Maintain contemporary expertise in areas of course content taught through ongoing professional development
• Develop syllabi, learning experiences, and assessments of student learning
• Provide instruction aligned with didactic courses while working closely and collaboratively with other faculty
• Implement individualized learning objectives and engage students in active learning
• Assist with program self-evaluation, including periodic and ongoing policy and curriculum review

Scholarship

Develop and maintain a scholarly agenda according to the College of Health Sciences scholarship requirements for clinical-track faculty members and accreditation criteria.

Service

All Physical Therapy faculty members are expected to provide service to the University, College, Department, profession, and the community. Consistent with the mission of CHS and the University, professional and service contributions to the Flint and regional community are particularly encouraged. Engagement in service activities at multiple levels is expected. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Clinical Assistant Professor

• Licensed, or eligible for licensure, as a physical therapist in the State of Michigan
• A minimum of a Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline
  • A DPT degree with Clinical Specialization (ABPTS, or other professional credentials) is required
• Contemporary expertise in physical therapy with an emphasis on content expertise in neurologic, orthopedic, and/or geriatric physical therapy
• Post-licensure professional/clinical practice equivalent to three (3) years of full-time work 
• Physical Therapy teaching experience (clinical or academic)
• Potential for collaboration in clinical scholarship
• Record of service contributions in clinical setting and/or profession
• Evidence of professional development

Clinical Associate Professor

• Meets the qualifications for Clinical Assistant Professor, and:
  • Has professional/clinical practice equivalent to five (5) years of full-time work
  • Demonstrates growth and maturation of teaching
  • Has a record of consistent service and demonstrated clinica
