WSPAbout the role
This Opportunity
WSP is seeking a Senior Technical Manager – Overhead Transmission Line Engineer to provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise for the planning, design, and execution of high‑voltage overhead transmission line projects. This role supports complex, multi‑phase utility and infrastructure programs from concept development through detailed design, construction, and commissioning.
The successful candidate will serve as a technical authority in overhead transmission line civil and structural engineering, providing guidance to project managers, engineers, and clients while ensuring designs meet or exceed industry standards for safety, constructability, reliability, and long‑term performance. Responsibilities include technical oversight, risk management, mentoring, and contributing to business development within WSP’s Power & Energy / Transmission Line practice.
Your Impact
Provide senior‑level technical leadership and oversight for overhead transmission line projects, including routing, structure spotting, foundations, access roads, grading, and constructability reviews.
- Lead and review the collection, analysis, and interpretation of survey data, LiDAR, GIS, geotechnical reports, environmental constraints, right‑of‑way information, and utility standards to support transmission line design and construction.
- Apply advanced civil and structural engineering principles to overhead transmission line projects involving wood, steel, and concrete structures; drilled shafts, spread footings, and pile foundations; and complex terrain and access conditions.
- Perform and/or oversee professional engineering analyses and evaluations of existing and proposed transmission facilities to confirm compliance with applicable utility standards, NESC, ASCE, IEEE, state and federal regulations, and client requirements.
- Develop and review transmission line design deliverables including plan and profile drawings, structure and foundation designs, specifications, material quantities, cost estimates, and construction phasing and safety plans.
- Provide technical oversight from project inception through construction support, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, supporting construction issues, and participating in field reviews as required.
- Lead large‑scale and technically complex transmission projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, subconsultants, and contractors while supporting project schedules, budgets, QA/QC, and risk management.
- Serve as a technical advisor to project managers and clients, identifying design risks, constructability concerns, and opportunities for innovation, standardization, and future‑ready solutions.
- Support permitting and regulatory review efforts by preparing or reviewing engineering documentation for environmental, land use, and utility approvals.
- Communicate effectively with utility clients, regulatory agencies, landowners, and internal stakeholders regarding technical issues, design decisions, and project challenges.
- Mentor and develop junior and mid‑level engineers, providing technical guidance, quality reviews, and support for professional licensure and career growth.
- Contribute to business development activities, including proposal preparation, scope development, and technical interviews for overhead transmission line projects.
- Remain current on industry standards, emerging technologies, and best practices related to overhead transmission line design and construction.
- Uphold WSP’s commitment to safety, quality, ethical decision‑making, and professional excellence.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You are
