CTE Automotive Technology Teaching Assistant
The Automotive Technology Teaching Assistant is a position where an individual assists an automotive technician instructor in a training program, helping students learn how to diagnose and repair vehicle issues by performing tasks like demonstrating procedures, assisting with hands-on repairs, and providing guidance on automotive systems, while also ensuring the safety and proper use of tools and equipment within the learning environment.
Key responsibilities of an Automotive Technology TA will include:
- Supporting the instructor:
Actively assisting the lead instructor during class sessions by demonstrating repair techniques, explaining complex concepts, and answering student questions.
- Hands-on assistance:
Guiding students through practical exercises by providing step-by-step instructions and ensuring proper tool usage while performing basic maintenance and repair tasks on vehicles.
- Safety oversight:
Enforcing safety protocols in the shop area, ensuring students follow proper procedures and wear appropriate protective gear.
- Vehicle preparation:
Preparing vehicles for student practice by inspecting their condition, identifying potential issues, and sourcing necessary parts.
- Diagnostic support:
Helping students utilize diagnostic tools to identify vehicle malfunctions and interpret diagnostic codes.
- Student evaluation:
Assisting the instructor in assessing student progress by observing their work during practical exercises and providing feedback.
- Lab maintenance:
Maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the automotive lab, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored and functional.
- Curriculum support:
Contributing to the development of course materials by researching new automotive technologies and providing input on lesson plans.
Required skills and qualifications:
- Basic automotive knowledge:
A strong understanding of automotive systems, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, brakes, and suspension.
- Safety awareness:
Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and following safety protocols.
- Hands-on experience:
Prior experience performing basic automotive repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Teaching aptitude:
Ability to clearly explain technical concepts in a way that is understandable to students with varying levels of knowledge.
- Communication skills:
Effective communication to answer student questions, provide feedback, and address concerns.
- Technical proficiency:
Familiarity with diagnostic tools and automotive repair equipment.
POSITION HOURS:
- 35 hours per week, 10 months per year
- New York State Level I, Level II, Level III, Pre-Professional, or Continuing teaching assistant certificate is required.
- The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $102.50 to the candidate.
