About the Role:
Alcoa Corp is seeking a Sr. Accountant - Team Lead to lead the U.S. team in the Financial Accounting Services (Shared Services) department. FAS handles general accounting responsibilities for North America locations. This position will be responsible for leading the U.S. accountants in the monthly closing process for assigned locations including but not limited to recording monthly general accounting journal entries, account reconciliations and month-end financial reviews.
The team is comprised of accountants both in the U.S. and Hungary which you will collaborate, advocate best practices, and assist other team members when necessary. This position is responsible for the development of the US team accountants including training, mentoring, and guiding. Along with strong accounting skills, key attributes include leadership skills, attention to detail, advanced excel skills, problem solving and organizational skills including multi-tasking.
Main Responsibilities:
Financial Accounting Services provides comprehensive general ledger accounting services to all Alcoa businesses and resource units across North America. This position requires an experienced accountant with a solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). One who is comfortable managing staff as well as working as a member of a cross‐functional team. The Team Lead / Senior Accountant is responsible for the following:
- Lead a team of 2-3 US accountants. The position will train and mentor staff in gaining advanced accounting knowledge following GAAP, standardization, and process improvement. Complete performance reviews and regular check-ins with the team according to Alcoa’s performance management.
- Work with manager to ensure adequate staffing levels to meet the work requirements (timely hiring / replacement / displacement).
- Drive process improvement and standardization / efficiency across the entire FAS team.
- Manage multiple priorities at one time: strong organization skill including prioritizing tasks and ability to multi-task.
- This position is expected to lead significant special projects as assigned in addition to the supervision of the daily accounting operations.
- Ensures accounting procedures are performed according to the department's defined standards and that work is completed by defined deadlines.
- Complexity of general ledger accounting services range from routine, recurring transactions to highly complex business acquisition and divestiture accounting activities. This position will be responsible for higher complex U.S. locations. This position will be the lead for any divesture and/or acquisition as it relates to the general ledger. And coordinate with locations and resource units (ie. Financial Accounting, Tax, Legal, etc).
- Alcoa Corp uses Oracle general ledger, one of the more user-friendly applications on the market.
- Month-end closing, serving as the primary point of contact for various US locations.
- Monthly account reconciliations and ad hoc analysis, solving problems to root cause to prevent recurrence. Account reconciliations are performed using the Blackline application which is the top reconciliation software. This position will perform account reconciliation reviews of high complex and material accounts to ensure proper accounting support and procedures are in place.
- Review location income statement and balance sheet fluctuations and investigate significant variances; communicate findings to location personnel and help to resolve discrepancies.
- Monitors adherence to standard operating procedures through every accounting cycle and suggests updates to procedures as needed.
- Develop and maintain expertise regarding GAAP, Alcoa’s Financial Management Handbook (FMHB), and other financial reporting rules and requirements.
- FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) filings quarterly and specifically the annual filing, which is fully audited by external auditors, PWC. The position will be the expert for FERC, understanding the accounting flow, FERC account structure and Consolidation process. Develop and train other team members to provide better coverage and improved workload in this area.
