Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Necropsy Assistant (CARE)

Job Description:

This position requires that ability to work with heavy equipment such as hoists, band saws, and a tissue digester. The assistant participates in the necropsy service, works with students and assists with maintenance activities for the service (cleaning, restocking, etc). Qualifications needed include the ability to stand, twist, and lift heavy objects over 50 lbs for extended periods. The position requires the ability to do simple math calculations and to follow specific Standard Operating Procedures with detail. The ability to use a computer and enter lab request and patient information is also desired. The position requires a good level of customer service skills and the ability to solve problems while following procedures.

  • 1. Working with various equipment
    • Loading and unloading tissue digester
    • Using a hoist
    • Cleaning the equipment after loading
    • Cleaning the coolers
    • Cleaning the necropsy area with disinfectants
    • Ensuring all equipment is cleaned and ready for use

 

  • 2. Tissue Processing and Assisting with Necropsy
    • Assisting in the necropsy. This includes showing students basic necropsy techniques and assisting the pathologist and residents during a necropsy
    • Processing patients for cremation and working closely with outside cremation companies
    • Participates in infectious disease necropsies and taking samples to the Alachua County Health Department when needed
    • Sharpening knives with a wet stone and steel
    • Preparing various chemical solutions

 

  • 3. Customer assistance and administrative support
    • Working with computers (scanning inventory) and bagging tissue
    • Receive submission paperwork and accession into computer system.
    • Stocking lab areas with specific supplies when needed
    • Talking to potential and current clients to assess needs and resolve issues
    • Adhering to procedures to maintain our Quality Management System requirements

 

  • 4. Other duties as assigned
Advertised Salary:

$15.00-$16.50/hour

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience, including customer service and computer records maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor degree preferred; experience working with animals; experience working in a Necropsy Laboratory
