Job Summary
The Pharmacy Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the pharmacy department, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients, in coordination with the Director of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Clinical Manager. This role involves managing pharmacy staff, optimizing workflow processes, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and enhancing the overall quality of pharmacy services. The Pharmacy Operations Manager will serve as a departmental liaison and collaborate with healthcare professionals to promote safe, appropriate, and cost-effective medication practices to improve patient outcomes.
Essential Functions

Operational Management:
- Oversee daily pharmacy operations, including medication dispensing, inventory management, controlled substance oversight, sterile compounding, and staff scheduling.
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance workflow efficiency and patient safety.
- Monitor and analyze pharmacy performance metrics to identify areas for improvement.
- Support the development and maintenance of new programs and/or roles to meet the evolving needs of the department.
- Supervise and ensure compliance with sterile compounding practices in accordance with USP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Oversee the preparation and quality assurance of sterile products, including intravenous (IV) admixtures and other compounded sterile preparations.
- Conduct regular training and competency assessments for staff involved in sterile compounding.
- Lead the implementation and optimization of pharmacy automation systems, including automated dispensing systems and medication management technologies.
- Collaborate with IT and informatics teams to enhance pharmacy informatics systems, ensuring accurate medication records and efficient data management.
- Evaluate and integrate new technologies to improve workflow, safety, and patient care outcomes.
Staff Management:
- Recruit, train, and supervise pharmacy staff, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy learners (i.e., students and residents).
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and professional development opportunities.
- Foster a collaborative and positive work environment that encourages teamwork and high-quality patient care.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations governing pharmacy practice.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation related to medication dispensing, inventory control, controlled substances, and sterile compounding.
- Prepare for and participate in regulatory inspections and audits.
Quality Assurance:
- Implement and monitor quality assurance programs to ensure the safe and effective use of medications.
- Investigate and resolve medication errors, adverse drug reactions, and other safety concerns.
- Collaborate with clinical staff to develop and implement medication management protocols.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
- Actively participate in hospital committees and interdisciplinary meetings to contribute to medication management strategies and policies.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to optimize medication therapy and improve operational efficiencies within the pharmacy department.
Budget Management:
- Assist in the development and management of the pharmacy budget, including forecasting expenses and revenue.
