Position Summary
The External Attack Surface Management Staff Security Engineer is responsible for leading efforts to identify, analyze, and mitigate risks associated with the organization’s external attack surface. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that all internet-facing assets, services, and endpoints are continuously monitored, assessed, and secured against emerging cyber threats. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in cybersecurity, expertise in ASM tools and methodologies, and a proactive approach to risk management.

Key Responsibilities
Attack Surface Discovery and Inventory:

  • Utilize advanced ASM tools and techniques to identify all external-facing assets, including cloud resources, domains, subdomains, APIs, and third-party integrations.

  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of external assets and ensure continuous monitoring for changes or new exposures.

Vulnerability Identification and Remediation:

  • Perform regular scans and assessments to identify vulnerabilities across the external attack surface.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to prioritize and remediate identified vulnerabilities in a timely manner.

  • Implement automation for vulnerability detection and notification where possible.

Risk Assessment and Threat Analysis:

  • Analyze and categorize risks associated with identified vulnerabilities and provide actionable recommendations to reduce exposure.

  • Monitor for threats targeting the organization’s external assets and proactively take steps to mitigate risks.

Incident Response and Escalation:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for incidents involving external-facing assets.

  • Provide detailed analysis and recommendations during incident response and forensic investigations.

Tool Management and Automation:

  • Manage and optimize ASM tools, including configuration, updates, and integration with other security platforms (e.g., SIEM, SOAR).

  • Develop and implement scripts or workflows to automate attack surface discovery and monitoring.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Work closely with development, DevOps, IT, and third-party vendors to secure external assets during design, deployment, and maintenance phases.

  • Provide training and awareness on attack surface management to relevant teams.

Policy and Governance:

  • Enforce endpoint security policies, standards, and guidelines.

  • Conduct regular security assessments and audits to identify and mitigate risks.

  • Work closely with compliance, audit, and risk management teams to meet regulatory and policy requirements (e.g., PCI DSS, HIPAA, SOX).

Reporting and Metrics:

  • Create regular reports and dashboards to communicate the status of the external attack surface, including vulnerabilities, risk trends, and remediation progress.

  • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for ASM program effectiveness.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years in Cybersecurity roles, with at least 3 years specializing in Attack Surface Management or related disciplines

  • 5+ years of experience with ASM Qualys

  • 5+ years of experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and securing cloud-based assets

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and reporting skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team

  • Strong understanding of networking, DNS, web applications, APIs, and common vulnerabilities (e.g., OWASP Top 10)

  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell) for automation

  • Knowledge of vulnerability management and penetration testing methodologies
