About the role

2026 Summer Intern - Clinical Pharmacology, Development Science

Department Summary

This position is at the modeling and simulation group, Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Genentech.  We are seeking for a highly motivated full-time summer intern to apply advanced modeling and simulation techniques including translational modeling and quantitative systems pharmacology/toxicology modeling to enable quantitative translation of literature, in vitro and preclinical data to inform the drug design, clinical dosing regimen and optimal therapeutic windows of therapeutic agents.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • During the project, the intern will become familiar with Genentech’s workflow for quantitative systems pharmacology / toxicology (QSP/QST) model development and its contributions to clinical drug development key decision making.

  • This research project is aiming for building physiological-based pharmacokinetic pharmacodynamic (PBPK/PD) and QSP/QST models to enable translation of in vitro and preclinical pharmacology / toxicology data for informing the drug design and clinical dosing regimen.

  • The models will be primarily implemented in MATLAB (SimBiology toolbox) and associated toolboxes (e.g, Global optimization, Parallel Computing toolboxes) for model development, parameter estimation and virtual population simulation.

  • Having hands-on experience for systems biology / pharmacology modeling, proficiency in MATLAB programming and a strong understanding of immunology are required. Proficiency in other programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Julia, Mathematica) and PK/PD modeling tools (e.g., Monolix) are nice to have.

  • The summer intern is expected to give a formal presentation at the end of the program and organize key research documents for archiving.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
