Associate Dean Graduate Studies

Department Overview

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

 

The Associate Dean for Graduate Studies (AD-GS) is responsible for providing leadership for all aspects of the Graduate Studies programs that are housed in, or interface with, the OHSU School of Medicine (SOM). The goal of Graduate Studies, and its programs, is to educate its graduates for impactful careers as scientists, researchers, and health systems/health care professionals to best serve and meet the needs of society. The AD-GS will work collaboratively with the Dean and Senior Associate Dean for Education to develop, implement, and lead initiatives to advance Graduate Studies programs, its faculty, and students, in accordance with institutional strategies and priorities and the needs of the communities we serve. The AD-GS reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Education.

Function/Duties of Position

Provide oversight for all aspects of the SOM Graduate Studies programs, including:

• Recruitment, outreach, and advising of prospective students.
• Admissions and matriculation of graduate students
• Student affairs programs that advise, guide, and inform students’ personal and professional identity formation and growth within their program.
• Faculty recruitment, development, and support that impact student education and training.
• Guide and develop policies within the SOM, and OHSU that impact Graduate Studies, its students, and its programs.
• Communicate regularly with students, faculty, and program leadership to optimize student learning and faculty engagement.
• Evaluation of program effectiveness using internal and external data sources to track progress towards mission-based goals.
• Strategic workforce development and outreach to meet workforce needs in Oregon.
• Graduate Studies program budgets and resources related to personnel, operations, and discretionary spending if available.
• Interface with leadership of the MD/PhD program to ensure alignment of student experience, support, and outcomes.
• Lead and/or support educational grants that impact graduate students
• Maintain and/or exceed compliance with program, regional, national, or professional accreditation standards.
• Engage with the OHSU Foundation, OHSU Alumni Association, and other entities (e.g., ARCS), to optimize philanthropic support of Graduate Studies students, faculty, and programs.

Specific Areas of Responsibility and Activities for the AD for Graduate Studies

 

1. Program Support and Evaluation

• a. Oversee the maintenance of accurate student records and approve all actions regarding student progress and completion of program and university requirements, including, but not limited to admissions, leave of absences, transfers of credit, extensions, probation, withdrawals, disciplinary actions, and ultimately the completion of degree requirements.
• b. Support programs as they develop and implement curricula and learner and faculty assessments, including the implementation of technology to optimize these academic processes.
• c. Support initiatives that promote teaching and mentoring excellence and sharing of best practices.
• d. Support interprofessional educational initiatives across the institution.
• e. Support programs to review and analyze internal and external program outcome data, including data on student diversity, applicant quality, and current/former students, with the goal of identifying opportunities for program improvement and efforts to lead that improvement.
• f. Support program strategic planning and the development of initiatives to achieve strategic goals.
• g. Oversee and support initiatives to enhance enrollment and retention of graduate students, working collaboratively with program leadership within Graduate Studies programs

2. Student Affairs and Support

• a. Oversee and support initiatives that promote effective transition for students into the School of Medicine and the development of personal and professional identity within their discipline.
• b. Organize and support efforts to support Graduate Studies students as it relates to career and academic advising and support, development of skills important for personal and professional well-being.
• c. Measure, track, and analyze outcomes related to student support services in Graduate Studies to evaluate the effectiveness of these support activities.
