GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Medical Assistant (MA) performs direct patient care activities under the direction of a licensed provider within the outpatient respiratory therapy program and tele-health pulmonology clinic, within the scope of practice (RCW 18.360.050). This is an on-site position. The MA supports both front-office and back-office operations, including rooming patients, obtaining and documenting vital signs, preparing charts, assisting with medication reconciliation, and entering clinical information into the electronic medical record (EMR).

The MA facilitates telehealth pulmonology clinic visits by preparing the telestation, operating peripheral exam devices, and assisting the remote provider with patient assessments and exams. The MA maintains efficient patient flow, communicates key information to the care team, provides excellent customer service, and collaborates with respiratory therapy and other departments to ensure safe, organized, and patient-centered care.


 
Qualifications 

Minimum Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):

Safety Sensitive per WA SB5123: No

Education / Licensure:


High school diploma or GED required. 
Current Washington State Medical Assistant Registration, or the ability to obtain it within 30 days.
National AAMA or equivalent strongly preferred.
BLS required.


 

Experience:


At least one (1) year of recent experience providing direct patient care in an outpatient or acute care medical setting is preferred.


 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:


Demonstrated knowledge of core medical assisting skills, including obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for exams, recognizing abnormal signs and symptoms, infection prevention, universal precautions, and basic medical terminology.
Ability to support tele-health clinical encounters by operating tele-station equipment and peripheral exam devices while assisting a remote provider with patient assessments and exams.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to anticipate needs, prioritize tasks, and manage patient flow in a dynamic outpatient environment.
Critical thinking skills and sound judgment with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining patient safety and workflow efficiency.
Effective interpersonal and customer service skills with patients, families, providers, and colleagues in a team-based care environment.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English and communicate clearly using professional verbal and written communication skills.
Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) documentation and accurate clinical data entry.
Competent with everyday computer technology, including email, internet/intranet, voicemail, Microsoft Office applications, typing/data entry, and standard office equipment.
Strong multitasking skills and adaptability to changing departmental needs and patient volumes.


 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES (but not limited to):


Rooms patients for outpatient respiratory therapy and tele-health pulmonology clinic visits; obtains and documents vital signs, chief complaint, history updates, allergies, and other required clinical information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Prepares patients and exam rooms for in-person and tele-health visits, ensuring appropriate equipment and supplies are available and functional.
Facilitates tele-health pulmonology visits by preparing the tele-station, operating peripheral exam devices, and supporting the remote provider during patient assessment and examination.
Opens, prepares, and maintains accurate patient charts; enters clinical data and updates documentation in the EMR to support efficient, paperless workflow.
